Windshield Molding Removal

Hi Folks, I would like to remove the rubber molding around the windshield on my 1982 Camaro. I am concerned about three possible problems. #1 The molding is brittle, getting it out in order to fix some pinhole rust spots along the roof may crack the windshield. Is there a video on this subject? #2 Does anyone know where I can get some new rubber windshield molding to put in after the car is painted? If the windshield cracks, where can I find a new, or used, windshield to replace the cracked windshield? Local glass guy says his order books don't go that far back. Thanks for your responses!

Try a glass shop...like ACE / a chain place.

They should have the resources to get glass / the moulding.

you'll need to pop out the glass in order to fix the rust!

Thanks for your reply, I will try Safelite. Do you think they will let me fill the pinholes while the windshield is out of the car before they put the new windshield back in. They will come to your house and do the windshield replacement. Maybe they will not replace the rubber molding till after the car has been repainted. I was hoping that it was the pinholes that were leaking and
if I could get the moulding out I could work in the channel under the moulding. Thanks for your answer to my first question, I will call Safelite tomorrow. Bill Spayd, Ocala.

They should!

Just tell them you need the windshield removed so you can fix rust and will have them come by to repalce it when you are done with the car...

Most places charge for removal and installation... so you'll prolly pay just for the removal, and the installation later.

Ask if they have the moulding..... And buy it and keep it in a safe place.

Thanks, I just sent an email to get information from Safelite. It appears it is the only way to ask them questions, no "live" people, no "live" chat, no local phone number, everything automated, pain in the butt! That's the way it is today I guess. Thanks for all your help. Bill, Ocala.

Re: Windshield Molding Removal

I had the same issue. However I was in need of a replacement windshield.
I removed the molding myself (mine didn't break but that doesn't matter because...) and pushed the windshield out on my own. Used an appropriate windshield removal tool , piano wire with two handles, and pushed it out with my feet from the front seats.
Did my rust repair and called a mobile installer. Got a new molding with the new windshield.

Keep in mind this only works if you need a new piece of glass because you mangle the window while pushing it out.
FTR. The molding is noticeably wider that the original. Not sure if that's the same in all cases.

Re: Windshield Molding Removal

Most installers carry a universal (wider) style molding. So ask which they carry or if they can get the OE type.
There was two OE types also, I think the later years is a barely noticeable 1/16 wider.Pretty sure classic and maybe hawks too have both. I know ebay does.

I didn't know they had two different widths, probably best to go with the wider width for me, my current very old rubber strip I
think has shrunk over the years so much so that there is now a gap between the roof and the molding at the corners, probably
about 1/8th of an inch. May have contributed to the leaking problem I now have. Take care, Bill Spayd, Ocala.

Later style, 7/16 wide. I think the first type was 5/16. Cant find that one.

It's supposed to rain some time today, I am going to leave the roof corners where the gaps are open and
see if the leak resumes. If it does then I plan to hopefully remove the old molding, reseal the channel
then put a new molding strip in. That's of course, if I don't crack the windshield! Thanks for your
response, Take care, Bill, Ocala, FL
