question about putting primer over bare metal spots.

Im repainting my camaro back to the factory red, somebody had the car painting a dark green in the early 90's and ive never been a fan but the car was great besides that so whatever but now im changing it finally. I have all the old clear coat sanded off and quite a bit of the old basecoat. some of the spots here and there i sanded though to bare metal, I have a gallon of urethane 2k primer ready to go, Ive been told thats fine over old paint but what about the bare metal spots? some type of etching primer? This is my first paint job and Iam taking my time with it and trying to keep cost down so the ole wife don't complain to much.

I will be taking the door handles off of course.

The 2k primer will be fine. If you had large bare metal spots I would use etching or epoxy for them, but 2k is a great all around for your job

I would etch or epoxy ANY bare metal. Unless you have a modern DTM primer...but the old school in me still trusts an etch over DTM's.

Id at least buy a can of etch from napa, make sure its clean and spray.

Do it before the metal rusts though!!

Re: question about putting primer over bare metal spots.

I've tried to skip steps before and got bitten both times! Trust me on this.....if it has had any previous paint work, or you've sanded through to metal (MOST CARS) you need to seal it!! Wait until you think the body is almost ready for paint. Then Epoxy prime the whole thing. This will take care of bare metal AND any underlying paint that might try to cause an issue. Then you can use your 2k over that and add a guide coat for final blocking before color.
