Ok I am getting close to painting my 87z28. I wanna paint it Hugger orange. Now my question is do people use a dark primer for a base or a light primer?

 

Fyi it is hugger orange.

 

Use a white sealer. The orange will not only cover quicker, but will be brighter as well. If you don't have white sealer, a couple coats of white basecoat will work just fine, with the orange right over the top of it. That's how I have always done it.... I do the same thing with yellow.

 

Ive considered this also and mine is an 87 IROC! Crazy. I wanna see what it would look like. I really like Hugger Orange and had a 6th gen in "orange crush" loved it

GM renames paint and I assume its for marketing reasons. A prime example is the "Arctic white" they used on 4th gen LS1 cars. That Arctic White is literally the exact same as "GM Bright White"

 

My experience and what I've read has been different. I believe there was a longer thread, years old, about the differences in colors the Camaros came with. Arctic White has a small amount of blue in it. Im also pretty certain that the orange that GM used is called Carosel Red.

 

Hugger Orange was the camaro color. Carousel Red was the GTO color. They have seperate names, but are the exact same formula.

 

Among people who aren't into third gens, my car gets more positive comments for it's color than it does for being an old Firebird.......

 

Love it and the color. Makes me wanna paint mine even more.

 

I concur about using white to seal it before basecoat.
it will take a lot more than you think to cover it completely. My buddy did some test panels for his 69 Chevelle and it took 7 coats of base to get it 100% covered. When they took the lead out of paint, the coverage decreased immensely.

 

So what would you use as a base? I am no painter by any means because I always thought that a darker base would make the Hugger Orange pop more.

 

yeah the statement about GM renaming paint colors came from a guy that worked at Maaco

 

He said he agrees with a white sealer. A dark sealer will make Hugger Orange appear dark, and not pop. It will look like a sick version
