Windshield Install Help

I'm having to remove my windshield to deal with some rust issues. I did some initial searching for the gasket to go back around the windshield. Not having much luck unless my searching skills suck. Anyone have a link to a replacement seal once I get the windshield back in?

Thanks

DynoDave43....you are correct. A bead of adhesive is what bonds it to the car. I was referring to the rubber seal that goes on after that. Perhaps the way I worded it was misleading. Sorry about that. It's the rubber that is pushed in around the top and sides. That's what I was looking for.

Re: Windshield Install Help

Since posting this I found it but was curious. Classic Industries sells it for $49.00. Camaro Central has it for $12.00. Can there be much difference in this product between the two vendors or is one of less quality? I certainly don't mind paying more if I'm getting a better product but this is my first time dealing with a windshield.

Good question.

You might check with a local glass shop.

Some are more correct... The less correct ones are much wider... Finding original width ones is hard... But they look better...

Here's what I came up with. About .352"

...a hair under 23/64ths?

Hawks and i think classic has them. Ive seen the early style (narrower) on ebay. The cheaper ones might be universal type;

Re: Windshield Install Help

Just measured the one I got. The width is a hair under 1/2” (15/32”). Part number is WFS203 and made by Precision. Just bought it on Rockauto a few weeks ago. I paid more for shipping ($10) than the part ($5).

So we think that would be the "wide" version then?

I had a Safelite tech tell me that some aftermarket glass is just slightly thinner and smaller than factory glass. I wonder if that wide moulding is to cover for those variances in the aftermarket?

Re: Windshield Install Help

Not sure. Most of the molding I’ve found doesn’t state a width. The ones that list a width pretty much all said 1/2”. I’m not gonna be too concerned about the 1/8” difference. That’s only 1/16” per side.

Re: Windshield Install Help

I got mine from a glass shop... it looks fine.

there ARE aftermarket / ones that do NOT look OE at all and are super thick got that for my S10 and never liked it...... I think 90-92 or 91-92 used a different width from previous years, but it wasnt a huge difference in size.

Re: Windshield Install Help

I have finally ordered the gasket. As mentioned in this thread the oem size is listed as 1/2" which is what I ended up with. The gasket on the windshield right now measures approx. 5/8". Only 1/8" in total difference. Shouldn't be an issue I imagine......thoughts?

Re: Windshield Install Help

Has anyone ever tried to remove an originally installed trim to replace it & leave the glass intact?
I want pull mine out & replace the lace/trim on the 89 but I don't risk breaking the original windshield
not sure how much oem urethane might be holding it in & don't want to just start pulling it out & find out the hard way.

Thoughts?

AFAIK, the OEM size is not 1/2”. The later cars, ‘90? and up were a little wider, but they were not that wide. For me, when I see 3rd gens with aftermarket moldings that are really wide, it sticks out like a sore thumb IMHO.

I removed several at the junkyard with no problem. The original glass on mine is currently molding less. However, the car is in storage and somewhat taken apart so it’s not like I’m driving it around like that. The problem is when you insert the new molding on, it has ridges where it inserts onto the channel where the glass is mounted to help hold it in. So, if you’re trying to reinsert the old or new molding back in without removing the glass, you may have problems with it not sealing properly against the glass. You can probably trim the molding where it goes into the channel to make it fit better, but I haven’t tried that yet. My worst fear would be to do that and it still doesn’t fit right making the whole thing a bust.
