what can I use to dye my black seats belts BLACKer? I want to re-new them. They have gotten faded and look purple.

Whats about that fabric dye? RITZ?

Or anyone else got any ideas?

thanks

Grab the owner's manual for virtually any car on the market. Look at the section about seat belts, and also the care and cleaning section. On every one I've seen, they warn never to bleach or dye the belts, as the fabric will be weakened.

Maybe there is a dye that won't damage them; I have no idea. Perhaps you could just lightly brush the dye on the surface, so at least it won't penetrate too far.

If you only need to re-color a small portion of the belt, like the part that sticks just out of the retractor when the belt isn't being worn (that seems to always be the worst part), try using a large permanent marker.

too bad

I used RIT to dye the carpet for my panels. Lets just say that you better not wear any good clothes while using the belts. If you sweat then you may leak moisture and the color can geet on your clothes. After they dry, brish them down really good and then hose them down to get rid of the excess dye. after that you should be good.

Just don't forget, the only way to discover if the belts have been weakened, is to have a crash.

The seatbelts dont look that bad. The belts didnt take all the color but the they are not as blueish purple as they were. They are actually blacker. So I guess everything is OK. As far as weakened them, well I dont know I guess I'll have to wait till I crash....NOT!!! i hope...

i tried this on a set of faded belts that were originally dark blue. liek others said, there was excess dye that had to be wiped off, and i hosed them for a good bit, until i could wipe the belt w/ a white rag and not have anything come off. by this time most of the coloring i did was gone. well i put them in anyway, a day or so later i hopped in the car, had a white t-shirt on and it was covered in black by the time i got out, so i took em out and fixed my original belts.

Like said above never dye your seat belts! this should be common sense. It might look good but is it worth risking your life?
