Custom Headliner DONE!! Woohoo!
Alright....I am finaly getting closer to completing my interior modifcations. I have never seen this done before, so I thought I would give it a shot. And might I say, it turned out pretty darn good.
Headliner Pics
I'm still working on the LED shift indicator lights that will be under the little display next to the shifter. That is going to take a little more thought though.
Enjoy the pics!

The whole thing is pretty simple. Just make a cardboard cutout of what design you want, glue it to the headliner, and then glue the material/foam on. I got the whole thing done this weekend. The whole project can be done in a weekend if you use these steps:
Friday- Remove headliner from car and remove old material. Begin carboard cutouts.
Saturday-Repair any weak points with fiberglass(add enough hardener to make it setup fast enough to get it hard in a day. Also finish the cardboard cutouts. Glue them on if you have time.
Sunday- Replace material. Wait to dry. Then reinstall in car.
I used some of the contact cement that must be applied with a brush. I do suggest going extra heavy on the glue since there is shaping of the material. I don't know how long this little idea will last, but I'll keep track. If it stands up to the test of time, I'll let ya know which adhesive I used.

It's standard crdboard like you would find on a refrigerator box. The foam is just the standard headliner material/foam combination. I got it from a place that does the recovering, so it's basicly the factory stuff.

Hey Tyler,
I had read a little bit about doing that raised-graphic look over in the Fabrication forum at carsound.com.......... but I had never ever thought about doing it to a headliner! Seriously dude, that's just incredible.
By the way, all the guys over there recommend highly against spray adhesive, saying that contact cement is much better. And for what it's worth, at my work, our sunroof guy has to make a new headliner whenever he puts a roof in....he uses a cheap paint spray gun with contact cement in it. But I've used spray adhesive a few times myself, and had no trouble with it.
Also, can you tell us more about your lighted center section? After seeing that, I think I've completely changed my mind about what I want to do with my taillights. How did you do it?

Dude, you could make some money doing that for other people! Nice job! Now I will try to figure out how to do something like that on a smaller scale for my IROC.

I was thinking of doing a little something to the visors then since I have a buch of the material left over. I guess this could also be done to the sail panels as well. I have not seen a design added to them in 3D yet. I'm sure someone has done it, but they have not posted about it yet. Mabye I should go and try to get a job at a local auto customization shop and see if they'll hire me to come up with ideas for them.
haha, like they would do that!
But seriously, I'm considering the sail panels and the visors next. I typed up a tech article on another site I have, but it's down right now. I'll give you guys a link to it as soon as it comes back up. I'll also get a few pics of it installed in the car as well.

The template I used is a hand sketched drawing about 3'X3'. I don't think there is any way to do it unless you have a plotter like they use in archetcture or something. I have the origional template hanging on the wall right now. I made a copy of it at first in case I messed it up. But, if you really need one, I could take a picture of it and post it on here. You would have to do a lot of scaling though. I don't know exactly how much.
The instructions are on my website.

That looks awesome! Great job man. I've been thinking a custom t-top headliner. Small, sutle things but they will add a custom touch like your's.

Tech article is done. I now have one for both the tail center mod and the headliner. They arn't as visual as I hoped, but I didn't expect to have so many people want to know how to do this. The article is in my sig.

Replacement fabric is most likely found at an auto apolstry shop that does headliner repair. If you ask at a local parts store, they should most likely be able to direct you to a place that sells the stuff. I got enough to cover the whole thing for $25. But I got more than I needed. I had enough extra around the edges to cover the sail panels as well. So you should be able to get it for around $20-$25. The contact cement was about $4-$7 a can (quart).
So overall, the total cost of teh project should not go over unless a lot of complications arise, such as fiberglassing, or else losing the whole headliner in the first place.
I set it on the back of the truck cover and my dad drove off with it on there. So I had to go pull another one from a salvage yard. I had complately covered the first one with fiberglass too. That sucker wasn't goning to break unless it was really forced too. But the second one didn't need any work done to it at all.
I'm going to take some pics of it in the car this weekend, so I'll have those posted on the site by about Saturday or Sunday.

I really enjoyed the center tail mod, although I did it with a little translucent paint you can get at your hobby store instead of colored lights. Really like the way it looks. Thanks

TZFBird,
That is sweet. You should be proud. Its like having a peice of art in your ride. I would be tempted to just lay the seat back and stare at the headliner for an hour or two.

It's damn impressive. The only other thing I've ever seen that comes close to what you've done was those custom door panels. The difference was they used tweed and flames. Still a niffty idea and it turned out GREAT. Awesome job...now if only I had the time to make some custom interior parts, lol, I'm just trying to keep myself from removing them...
I used to drive around with no interior panels at ALL when I was doing my stereo stuff....those were the days, haha.
Again...awesome job, hopefully Dirk posts the link to your tech article.
