C4 Brakes installed

I ordered my c4 brake kit from Ed Miller and its been great. I have done some full braking with the c4's and these brakes are perfect! I can slam on the brakes and stop quick and solidly now and the brakes do not fade! I highly recomend upgrading the stock brakes, Its really worth the money for safety!

How much was the C4 kit? Is it for the front or rear? Are the calipers aluminum? I'm getting a 9bolt Aussie rear end and would like to get disc when I put it in. I was thinking about using aluminum PBR calipers if I can find out where to get them.

Looks like he has the Baer bumpsteer kit. Ed's also doing an LS1 front brake kit as well. Great guy and pleasure to deal with.

baer bumpsteer

Yeah, on my other thread that I posted a link to, I discussed the baer bumpsteer kit. I bought it through scoggin dickey which was great. This kit has spacers on the end to lower the outer tie rod end to return the proper steering geometry to the front when using drop springs or spindles. I would've gotten the ls1 brakes if they were available, but Im happy with my c4's.

Damn....I think Ed's about to be famous! Ed, everyone seems to be talking about you, friend.

iroctpis

Glad you found good use out of those. Alloy didn't seem to be that impressed, but there were still some questions about his booster (if it matters or not). Glad they're working good. I'm still debating which one. Now that Ed's given us all a nice clue into how to make the LS1 bracket design work.

Some guys may not notice a HUGE difference between their stock brakes and the C4s, especially if their stock brakes are working good. The stock disc/drum brakes on my RS were just totally rebuilt, front and rear, earlier this spring, and I didn't notice a mind-altering difference in performance...because my stock system was operating fine. However, they do work GREAT and are still a VERY NICE upgrade to what these cars came with: Bigger rotors, aluminum calipers, no messing with bearings. I know Dewey (who has Alloy's "old" C4 kit) is very happy with his, as I am with mine.

I'm fortunate to get to do what I do, and I just try to help others on this site like I have been helped. I wouldn't be where I am today without this site and help from all you guys.

I want to put c4 brakes on my car, but have not been able to figure something out. What special machining has to be done to the spindle? Or can I just buy 1LE spindles and not have to do any machining at all. Then, all I do is machine the stock 82-92 rotors to the hub to a certain diameter. Then just make a custom bracket to mount the calipers. Is that all. All the technical stuff that has been written has just confused me. I have access 24/7 to a machine shop, so this should not be hard.

Yep....search "c4 brakes" and "ls1 brakes" and you'll find all your answers. Search the web for pics on how to mod your spindles.

iroctpis

true...c5's are nice, but wasn't the last word that you'd have to have 17" rims to squeeze them in? I know someone was ruminating about grinding down the ribs on the caliper, but I did not think it had been tried.

As a former owner of an 00' TA, I can highly recommend LS1 setups.

c5's

I have yet to pull a wheel off to see, but I am positive these will fit inside 16" wheels. I may try to test fit it today.

Ed
I have read that they will fit, and Ed thinks they might, If they do then I should've got those, but I'm happy with these now.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You're talking about C5s, not C4s or LS1s. The C5s WILL NOT fit 16" wheels, the stiffening ribs of the C5 calipers with the 13" rotors won't allow it.

Bes: Spindle modding isn't that bad. You can use a hacksaw if you don't have access to a bandsaw or the like. You'll be hard pressed to find true "1LE" spindles out there, and their cost doesn't justify them. Other than that, you seem to have the jist of it.

Ed...last I read, you got your bracket sized correctly. Have you assembled the LS1 brakes on your car yet?

Just on the workbench. The car's in the shop now getting painted after the front end crunch back in Sept. I got them assembled on the bench and it all fits up nice tho. I might just install the things...
