Rear disc emergency cable

Do you have to have the emergency brake cable on rear disc brakes in order for the brakes to work properly....??? Thank you very much for any answers, Tom

Yes, I know they are different...I have both...My question is do you have to have the emergency brake cable to make the brakes work peoperly??? I thought I read somewhere that it was involved in adjustment, or something....Thanks, Tom

i do not think you need the cable to get the brakes to work, generally there is adjustment in the parking brake mechanism that needs to be adjusted to get the e-brake to function properly, but like i said the brakes should work fine. i do not however recommend driving without a functional e-brake. i just did my ls1 rear brake swap and the parking brake, while a different design, does not have any affect on the actually functionality of the brakes, and need adjustment to work properly. does this help?

You need to start using the emer. brake with the factory rear disc. They keep the acutator free and in working condition. I had a long talk with a 30 year experianced brake mechanic on these types of brakes. Using the emer. brake and keeping it adjusted properly will help keep the rears in working order. These brakes are not the best but hey, it's what comes on the car. Badman

The factory 4-wheel disc are not the best unless your car has the newer style. I donot know what year the upgrades came out, suggest you do a search in the brake forumn. I upgraded to the LE1 brake system this year. They are much better than the original Delco Moraine. As for braking, disc is always better, stays cooler, less fade. Again, go with the newer style calipers and rotors. You will be much happier and have better stopping power. Badman

the rear brakes useing the hydralics are seperate to the cable driven park brake so the answer you

no ebrake has nothing to do with functional rear brakes

:agree: Before I went to 1LE's, I installed the 'fix' kit on the old iron calipers (82-88). Frankly, I never had any problems with them, and IMO, they're a bit underrated. At any rate, should you ever get up-grade fever, you have a good platform to start with.
