LS1 swap from bigbrake upgrade

Hi everyone.

I am looking to swap my stock brakes from my 88 IROC to the LS1 brakes from bigbrakeupgrade: http://www.metzcon.com/bigbrake/pricing.htm

So I wanted get some opinions from knowledgeable people and where better than to ask the experts on this board.

First off I am not that car savvy so any help would be much appreciated.

So here are a couple of questions:

Has anyone bought the upgrade from them and what are your opinions on it?

Another question is what do I actually need to make the conversion. Do I need all those items on the price list to make the conversion? Also will they fit, or do I have to make any adjustments? Will the package require any sanding or drilling?

I lowered the car with lowering springs (about 1-2 inches). And I am sporting 245/50/16 tires at the front and 255/50/16 tires on back wheels if that even makes a difference for the swap.

Again, thank you all for your replies and advice and wisdom. I really appreciate it! You guys rock!!!

Re: LS1 swap from bigbrake upgrade

Hi there,

I bought the complete Set and it is a easy build in. Took me about 30min per Side. Lowering or Tire size is not an issue, but you have to keep them 16" or go bigger if you want.
And it´s up to you if you want some extra Stuff like powder coating or drilled Rotors.

Well all I can say is that I´m totally happy with that Set and it was nice making buisness with them Guys.

The kit you listed first, is complete. All the other stuff you listed, are upgrades, or pieces to build your own system, like if you have calipers, but no spindles, etc.

I already scored my extra OEM spacers, so I can keep my GTA crosslace 16" wheels. I just can't go bigger than the 12.75" rotors, and keep my wheels. Oh well. I LOVE my crosslace wheels on my GTA!

Re: LS1 swap from bigbrake upgrade

Thanks a lot to the both of you. Your answers definitely helped and allowed me to gain more insight into this.

Just have a couple of questions. When you order the complete kit, do they send both rear brakes and front brake or just rear?

Also any of the other options you guys recommend? For example drilled rotors? My buddy said that they would allow the car to stop on a dime, however they are more for racing. Would they be good?

What would custom hubs do? Do I need them? Do I have to modify my spindles?

Thanks again in advance guys!!!!!

Outstanding upgrade. I bought my kit last fall. Very easy install and my Z stops like right now. I had a factory disc brakes with rear disks and I previously installed an Earls S/S brake line kit. When you do the upgrade flush and refill your brake fluid.

I bought their C5 kit and I love it. Don't waste your money on drilled and/or slotted rotors.

Re: LS1 swap from bigbrake upgrade

If you only pick one upgrade--get the stainless steel lines--much better tehn rubber which expands under braking. Maybe some good pads too. I really want this kit myself--thirdgen brakes are a joke--totally inadeqate for just normal driving.

Re: LS1 swap from bigbrake upgrade

They do offer a good kit but make sure you shop around. Are ceramic GM pads and braided lines included in that price? If not, keep looking and get the best kit for your money.

Re: LS1 swap from bigbrake upgrade

When I ran the stock brakes I liked Performance Friction but, with my LS1 upgrade kit I would also like to know which are the best pads for street use. I am sick of the brake dust on my wheels. I thought about trying ceramic pads but I would like some opinions. Any ideas or experiences would be helpful.
