Caliper rebuilding help!!!

Im in NZ and we are rebuilding a 1982 TA but it has a 1988 GTA diif.

The rear calipers need rebuilding and it has been locally priced at about US$400 to rebuild.

Is this price good or bad and are there rebuild kits i could buy from the US instead.

The front brakes are from 1982 and i might do these at the same time but havent looked at these yet.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Caliper rebuilding help!!!

i assure they are the pbr rear calipers? the going price around here is somewhere in the neighborhood of 160 bux for re-maned rear calipers. Thats the complete rebuilt caliper, not just parts. The fronts are probably the iron single piston, i bough them re-maned a few years ago for less that 40 bux each.

Re: Caliper rebuilding help!!!

The diff is off an 88 GTA with a 5.7 TPI setup.

How do you tell what model they are?

Could you tell me who sells these remaned units?

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Caliper rebuilding help!!!

An 88 should still have the old Delco-Moraine iron calipers and 10.5" rotors (which should be the same as the front on an 82). At any rate, there are rebuild kits that would cost far, far less than $400.

Re: Caliper rebuilding help!!!

The calipers are all the same unless someone has upgraded them. I believe all 3rd gen calipers

Fenco Reman / Brake Caliper - Rear
Warranty - LLT
Price: $44.99
Core: $72.00
Total: $116.99
Note:
Fits either side

I found these on Autozone.com.. Once you turn in your old ones you are only spending $45 each.. You would be way better off getting rebuilt ones than to try and rebuild your old ones.

Yes the rear rotors are 10.5"

Are you saying then that the front and rear calipers are the same?

Thanks

Re: Caliper rebuilding help!!!

Have you looked up a caliper repair kit?
You could rebuild both calipers for under $20.
O rings and a dust cover.
Its not hard to do.

Re: Caliper rebuilding help!!!

No they are not the same. Both Rear calipers are identical. You just have to swap them around around because of the design of the rear end.

Both front calipers are the same style as the back but have completely different part numbers. From Autozone.com they will run you about 12.99 each plus a 11.00 core charge. Heck for 25.00 plus tax if you take your old calipers in when you get them both front ones, you will have 2 brand new ones with a life time warranty. Makes more sense to do that than to even try to rebuild them. I know 90% of all auto parts stores carry these right in stock, Napa, Pepboys, Advance, Auto-zone, Advantage, and many many others.

He is in NEW ZEALAND! I doubt Pep Boys and Autozone have branches there...

This from a Kiwi living in the USA.

Re: Caliper rebuilding help!!!

You are 100% correct, I tried to look up a local parts store in NZ.. That wasn't too bad until I tried to find a GM Dealership. Makes it a little easier for me to get ahold of since I work at Auto-Zone in the US. Bigmacnz please pm me and I might be able to help you out..
