4th gen / 3rd gen Wilwood rear brake kit, 9 bolt

4th gen / 3rd gen Wilwood rear brake kit, 9 bolt

I think I've decided on Ed's Wilwood13" 4 piston FSL front brake kit. Now i'd like something suitable for the rear. I have seen a few good posts about the Wilwood 4 piston kit for 4th gens. WIL-140-7148. It seems as though this kit is an easy bolt on for our 10 bolt rears. But I have a disc 9 bolt. How can I make this work?

I think I would just need a conversion bracket, right? I don't think Ed currently offers one.

Any ideas?

I to have the posi 9 bolt rear end, I heard that it is from Australia, would the above said kit work out ?

Apparently its a bolt on for the 10 bolt rears. I know its not for the 9 bolt, different backing plate. I'm trying to find a way to adapt it. Thats why I posted my question.

Hmm...good question. I would assume if you had the backing plate redrilled for the 9 bolt pattern that it would work, insert it as you would the stock backing plate. But I'd check with Wilwood first, see if they have addressed it before. If not you may be a guinea pig for a new setup.

Ok, I'll give Wilwood a call.

If not Ed do you think you will be able to fab something up? What about the e-brake?

Do you know what rotors this kit uses, any stock replacements?

Do you offer NO upgrade for the 9-bolt, other than iron to PBR? I have the 87 9-bolt, with the iron calipers & just don't feel changing to the 89+ PBRs is worth it, for such a minor improvement.

Since my wheels fit right as the edge of the wheel lip, going to the wider 4th gen for bigger rotors & still just the PBRs 10-bolt is not an option for me, but I want bigger discs, to fit under my 17s.

Ok Ed,

I'm getting fairly close to contacting you make this setup work. Do you or anyone else know what rotor is used in this kit? It must be a stock replacement for something. I am planning to get DBA 4000 series rotors when I order your front 13" Wilwood kit, and I would like the rears to match, or at least close.

If you are simply looking for a brake set up with larger rotors to fill up the space a 17" wheel leaves... Take a look at ED's website. he offers the 89-97 PBR brakes with his custom backing plates to accommodate full 13" rotors.

As far as changing from the Delco-Moraine iron calipers to the PBRs (that Ed set me up with)... There was a huge difference! The iron calipers were basically doing nothing (very common problem)... they hardly contacted the rotors. With the PBRs I now have four wheel brakes again!

If I simply wanted the 89-97 brakes, I woulda just put the 89 9-bolt rear end I had & not sold it.

While Ed has some good stuff, his stuff has always left a lot to desire, since most descriptions don't even say front/rear (can't always tell by the pic) or if the item is for a 9-bolt or 10-bolt.

I've tried asking him, but apparently he is so busy with new products & selling his current products, clear replies n his stuff, is very low on his Priority list. Also explains why I haven't ever spent any money with him......Don't know what to order.

While the Delco Moraines have the reputation of being poor, mine work VERY well. I can easily lock up all 4 tires at 60 mph (deer!). While locking up tires is not effective in braking, it does show my calipers can clamp down, quite well.

I know what you mean Stephen. My rear Moraines work fine as well, I just needed to add a bit of rear bias. However I still want to upgrade as I'd like the car to be capable of occasional track duty. So the questions remain:

What rotors do these wilwood rear kits include?

Is Ed willing to make plates to adapt this to a 9 bolt?

Ed if we can work out an agreement, I can buy the rear kit and send it to you to work on. I don't plan to overhaul the brakes until fall anyway.

No stock replacements, Wilwood only. You can get drilled and slotted options but those rotors have an internal drum shoe but it's not close to C5 or LS1 size.

I normally recommend the '89-97 PBR setup with a few rotor sizes to choose from as this is a totally bolt on setup. This is the simplest way to go.

The stock size C5 rear discs will fit 17" wheels.

I don't see your dilemma, everything listed for the rear says "Rear". If it's a front upgrade theres a spindle and a caliper with two or more pistons in the pic which only go on the front. If it's for a 9 bolt it states "BW 9 bolt"...I think that's pretty clear man. No offense intended but I call 'em like I see 'em.

The rear discs can work well if used regularly or if the recall kit is installed, Stephen seems to have no issues with his.

I can look into it, I have a set or two of the Wilwood backing plates and rotors in the shop. I'll put it on the list.
