Rear calipers are on the opposite side....WHY!!!

Just wondering in anyone can tell me why the rear calipers are on the opposite side.....Does it make for better braking....

I just swapped out my 9-bolt for a 9" and it has drums on it....I want to ditch the drums and up grade the stock disc brakes but not to sure if the factory one will swap over.....

If my info is correct, for the cast iron calipers, it was a cost saving thing for GM. They didn't have to make separate casting forms for left and right, and used the same part number for each side.

Those particular disc brakes sucked anyway.

The Delco-Moraine calipers have a bad reputaton on TGO, but I'm uncertain if that reputation is truly merited. I ran them for a while and I thought they performed well enough. The time might be ripe for a better selection than the above, however--and there are a number to choose from these days. You might eye the following site for more info:

BTW, the PBR's, in 89+, were the first calipers to both be positioned to the rear of the rotor.

Mine perform quite well. At idle, they hold the car perfect. Will hold until I go for a powerbrake & roast the back tires. I've locked all 4 brakes from 60mph, when a deer ran out & they never give me any grief, even at inspection time.

All while being behind an Automatic, so the Emergency Brake rarely even gets used, yet never fails at inspection time.

I've autocrossed with them for a little more then 1 season and never had any issues. If I got into the brakes a little to quick, I would actually lock the back and have it slide around on me. It helped rotate the car which was good, but it cost me time and put more wear on the back tires. I plan on doing the C5 front setup this winter but I still don't know what I'm going to do with the rear.

I have the C5 fronts, LS1 rears, I like them quite well . I've never autocrossed, but had a few panic stops. Much much better than the stock third gen stuff. I also have the 1LE prop valve. If I were racing, I would probably go with the adjustable valve. Dean
