Some LS1 brake upgrade questions (searches but no answers)

For LS1 front brakes, what flexible line should I use? I ask because I noticed a difference in the line diameter when looking at the 2 side by side. By the 2 I mean the LS1 beake hose, and the stock 3rd gen one. Here's what I'm talking about: 3rd gen on right, LS on left.

Also, if I end up using the LS1 hoses I'll just extend the hard line the extra distance needed. Any harm in this that anyone can think of?

I've been gathering information on this swap myself. From what i have read so far using the 1LE option brake lines is the way to go cause they are longer than the non-1LE brake lines. This is the first time i've heard of the line size being different.

Funny you should mention that since I thought the same thing and ordered a pair from AZ. I'm hoping the fluid passage will be larger like the LS hoses are. AZ JUST called to say the hoses are in. Pics will be up later to let people know.

I did the LS1 front brake swap and used the front flex hoses from an 86 Camaro. No issues and the hoses have the intermediate support too.

I'm not saying 3rd gen hoses won't work, I just don't' want to create a fluid bottleneck if I don't have to.

How long are your wheel studs?

ARP 7708.
2.5" long. I had to cut off about 5/8" or use open lug nuts.

I did that for mock-up purposes.
I actually used open lugs for a while until I bought a new set of McGard 64012 nuts. Then I had to cut the studs down to fit.

I'm going to be using 3.25" ARP studs with my swap and the stock replacement earls' braided line kit looks like it should be a bolt in addition, plus it's what was already on the vehicle.

Do your Earl's lines have the provision for support about mid length?

Am I the only one concerned with the difference in fluid passage diameter?! The 1LE lines I ordered are the same as stock.

Re: Some LS1 brake upgrade questions (searches but no answers)

In a hydraulic system it's not a matter of fluid flow (as in a fuel line) but in the transmission of pressure. Unless you're working with force applied (as in the caliper piston diameter) size doesn't really matter. Of course there are other variables to consider but in these applications, there won't be any measurable benefit from having larger lines. That's the way I understand it anyway.

yes the thirdgen braided brake lines have a provision midlength

doesn't matter since the brake line is similar size to that hole regardless, it's a pressure system not volume, you'll be fine

Re: Some LS1 brake upgrade questions (searches but no answers)

I just used the factory 83 lines on my LS1 conversion. Banjo bolts for the LS1 calipers fit fine. I just had to turn the line 180 so that the line would fit flat. Works great. I even was able to use the middle line support.

Same here. What I WOULD like is the same fit of the OEM rubber line in braided steel. There are plenty that will fit however I couldn't find anything with the mid line support.

I dont think that I have seen any braided lines with the middle support. Have you checked flynbye?

no problem and it uses the fatory hold down on the strut the line has an adj slider so you can mount it the way you want too

Re: Some LS1 brake upgrade questions (searches but no answers)

you are looking at this wrong. fluid flow is one deal. fluid pressure is another. a hydraulic system gets its pressure from restriction. not the pump itself. i would be ready to bet that you cannot tell a difference if you were to install either line and switch it. a brake system works mostly off pressure more than flow. i can have a 1/4 inch hole in a line and have great flow. or i can have an 1/8 inch hole and better pressure. ill take the 1/8 inch anytime due to the restriction being pressure.
