From disc to drum...

Hey guys, not sure if this belongs here or in the drivetrain section but here it goes: I have a '91 rs with a crappy 2.73 open rear. My friend has a posi 3.42 out of a third gen that he's selling me for an awesome price. Only catch is he wants to keep all the disc brake components. I've seen a ton of drum to disc swaps but i need to know if I can bolt my stock drum brakes up to this rear?? I know this is a down grade but I'm trying to keep this on the cheap as possible. Thanks!

Re: From disc to drum...

Okay I found out that drum brakes have a different bracket than disc brakes so they wont bolt on, but I also found out that '90 and up have a different drum bracket that may fit?? Anyone know abt this?

Re: From disc to drum...

no, cant bolt drums to it. You would be better off sourcing the disc brake parts and using them.

is this new rear a 9 bolt or a 10 bolt? r

Re: From disc to drum...

The two axle flanges, drum and disc, are completely different. A drum flange can be modified to accept a disc backing plate, but the other way around would be problematic.

Re: From disc to drum...

Okay, so it's the axle flange that's different! I was a little confused on what exactly was different. I'm gonna see if I can talk him into selling the disk brakes with it. Thank yall a ton! This forum has saved my butt quite a few times

Re: From disc to drum...

what brakes are on the rear you are looking to get? if they are iron, they are pretty much worthless. If they are the later aluminum finned pbr's, they are pretty good.
