sup everybody..... my car is losing its stopping power so i decided to check my brakes, wheels, etc .... when i took off the rear driver side wheel i noticed this plate or spacer on it... its only on the one side and not the other... is this standard and what is it???

my e-brake is not holding either.... when i pulled off the other rear wheel this is what i see! dam.... is this the ebrake cable??? if so, how do i fix it???

 

i also noticed that the brake pad on the right where the snapped cable is wider than the left where that spacer/plate ...

 

from what i can see, all my lines look good so my buddy suggest i get a new master cylinder and prop valve... any suggestions??

Those spacers came on all the disc brake cars...

Their presence, or the presence of their absence, doesn't seem to matter to the car's operation either way.

I suspect, but don't "know", that they had something to do with manufacturing; such as for instance, the equipment used on the assembly lineto install the rear to the car, or the wheels to the rear, needed them to make the location of something EXACTLY match the same thing on a drum rear. I.e. they are only necessary during manufacture and are no longer required once it has left the factory.

 

my very stripped down base model 86 Camaro has those goofy spacers on it- it left the factory with a V6, drum brakes, and 15" wheels. i was shocked that they were there, given that the car had some of those cheap steel wagon wheels with the chrome outer rim and gold centers..

 

My 82 trans am had 14" turbocast rims and had the spacers too. But IIRC it had them on all 4 wheels.
