C4, non-HD conversion (front) help

I was hoping someone can give some specifics to save me some time on the conversion, it seems like there's a lot of details about HD, LS1, C5... conversions but from searching and looking through Lukestaff's info there seem to be gaps WRT to a standard C4 conversion. Hopefully someone can save me some time with some details:
  • What hub do I start with? (lukestaff's page says standard?, where some of the others need the different offset 1LE hub)
  • How thick should the bracket be? there is info about the other brackets, including the HD (typically total thickness of 1/2", something like 3/8" plate with an 1/8" washer, nothing listed for standard C4)- FWIW, I'm using rear C4 rotors that have the shorter hat and shouldn't need the bigger offset, but I don't know for sure
  • anyone know what the difference in hub offset is between the standard and the 1LE hubs?
  • has anyone found any nicer bearing caps?

Re: C4, non-HD conversion (front) help

FWIW, if anyone is wondering why I'm going with the lesser, standard C4 brakes:
- they're still 1.5" bigger than stock
- lots of good parts available
- the lightest possible combination
- will fit in 15's (I'm hoping that they'll fit in a set of stock firebird 15's, I kind of like it for a stock/stealth look, dragrace combination. I also like the idea of slapping a set of 15" draglites on the front of the car
- did I mention they're really light?

I have not been on this site in a long time but logged on today and saw this. It has been over 10 years since I did all the work on the C4 setup but I think to use the C4 NON-HD setup you should use the C4 rear rotor instead of the front. It is the same diameter and thickness but has a shallower offset so you can use the standard hub with it. This makes the setup even lighter as the hub is smaller and the rotor has less metal in the hat due to a smaller offset.

Re: C4, non-HD conversion (front) help

yep, I have a set of rear rotors coming, snagged a set of front calipers and abutments off of a '95 (I think) vette at the JY yesterday, I've hacked up a set of stock hubs, and have them chucked up on my lathe but decided that I didn't trust that setup so I have a bullnose coming to day to support the other side so i can finish them (anyone have any suggestions for OD? I'm actually considering drilling them out some or otherwise lightening them even more if they look like they're going to be strong enough).

any idea how think the bracket needs to be? I know that it's the same pattern as for the HD brakes, but I haven't been able to find any numbers for the thickness...

Re: C4, non-HD conversion (front) help

I used 5/16" for the brackets. Recall this as the metal supplier wanted to charge a lot for the stock. That is at the time 5/16" was an odd size (uh-huh). I don't recall if I spaced anything with washers, but don't think that I did.

For the hubs, I didn't turn the OD down at all. I did put a chamfer on the front face to side edge to help clear the radius on the inside of the rotor hat.

When you press in the new studs be sure to line up the knurls. Otherwise the hub can crack.

RBob.

The 1LE disc sticks out the wheel around 7mm.

Crossfire, what does this setup weigh compared to the factory setup?

Re: C4, non-HD conversion (front) help

FWIW, here is what I remember from my research on this swap:

The hubs used are standard hubs. They can either be chamfered as mentioned above, or turned down to an OD of 5.95".

REAR C4 rotors are used, also mentioned above.

The wheel studs need to be 1/2" longer than stock, same diameter(13mm?).

I was thinking the bracket needed to 3/8" thick, but 5/16" is a possibility. I don't have my notes in front of me right now though as it's 1:30am here.

You need to trim almost all the metal off the dust shield that goes behind the rotor.

C4 front brake hoses are needed to mate to the calipers properly.

On mounting the caliper abutments, one bolt was a standard hex head, the other had to be an Allen head for clearance reasons. I can't remember which position it went in, top or bottom, but I remember one had to Allen head cause I hate using them under the car ever since I ruined 3 Allen head sockets one time trying to change calipers on my wife's car.

15" wheels fit fine, even the firebird rims.

I have the calipers and rotors waiting to go on my Camaro once I can get the hubs and brackets made.
