Seating rear brake caliper piston 87 IROC-Z

I have an 87 IROC-Z with the 5.7L engine. Does the rear caliper piston push in like the front or does it screw back into the caliper?

Thanks.

It is a push, but use a spreader tool or an old pad with a C-clamp to push it.

They do rotate, and if they do they can move forward (Towards clamping on the rotor). You will notice on your pad there is a tab that needs to seat into the piston face. I wish I had a picture to explain this better, but you should see what I am talking about looking at it. Make sure the pad tab sits into one of the holes on the piston face.

You can move them with the double lead screw or by rotating the piston face, but they do push back.

The adjustment is a PITA. Once it is on the rotor, you need to turn the double lead screw until the pads are lightly dressing on the rotor, and you can get the parking brake leave on in the right position. Took me a few time to get it correct, and while you are turning it, you do not want the screw to go in. I used a washer as a spacer behind my wrench, put my wrench on, and then used the nut over the wrench.

I'm familiar with the tab, I've done over 100 brake jobs on various vehicles, just wasn't sure about the seating of the piston. First rear brake job on my IROC, which I've owned for 32 years with only 106,000 kilometers on the odometer. I'm hard on my brakes and was surprised to get this mileage out of my rear pads. Still using the original rotors as well, still look like brand new since I don't drive her in the rain.

Because the rear brakes don't do that much braking. This can be remedied by a spring in the proportioning valve if you haven't read up on it.

Good luck, the rears are a bit of a PITA to get adjusted back properly.
