j65 to pbr

Does anyone know if the 89 to 92 pbr non 1le rear calipers will directly interchange with the 1988 j65 rear calipers on a borg warner 9 bolt. Thanks

Yup, from their backing plate out. Bolt right up to the axle flange.

The PBR calipers won't bolt to the Saggy backing plate however, if that's what you're thinking of.

89-92 PBR calipers ARE 1LE calipers. They're the same thing.

BTW, all four-wheel disc brakes, regardless of type, are J65.

Re: j65 to pbr

So I would have to change the backing plate to mount the calipers? It is not a direct swap.

Thanks for the info. When they changed them I thought they would have used a different RPO.

"1LE caliper" is the misnomer. 1LEs used the same PBR caliper as all rear disc 89-92s. 1LE is the differentiating nomenclature that applies to the FRONT brakes, not the back.

89 Camaro with J65 rear disc = PBR calipers
89 Camaro with 1LE = PBR Calipers

If only there was as much understanding of 1LE as there is confusion.

Yes, you would have to change the backing plates to mount the 1LE/PBRs, so the swap isn't direct. Here's a link that details my swap:

https://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/f...iscs-89-a.html

Note the difference between 9- and 10-bolt backing plates in post 21.

Re: j65 to pbr

J65 has been the RPO for disc brakes on any number of vehicles for years and years. It's not a "part number" as such; it's an assembly instruction for the shop floor.

As stated, the 89-92 1LE cars used the same rear brakes as the non-1LE disc equipped ones in those years. They're all identical. PBR calipers.

No the PBR CALIPERS will not bolt up directly in place of the Saggy CALIPERS. They are completely different. The rotor is over an inch and a half bigger, meaning the caliper is ¾" farther out from the center of the axle; both sides of the PBRs mount to the rear of the axle and are therefore a left/right pair, rather than one in front and one in the rear like the Saggys, which are therefore the same part on both sides; the PBRs use a "carrier" which mounts to the backing plate, rather than the calipers mounting directly to the plate; and so forth. COMPLETELY different.

But, the backing plates for either kind bolt right up to the axle housing flange, the same for both systems; so at that level, as a SYSTEM, they interchange directly.
