Parking Brake randomly loses all tension while pulling

1991 RS. About 15-20% of the time that I pull the parking brake, the handle loses all tension, and violently snaps up like it's all of a sudden not connected to anything, but then it feels perfectly fine the very next pull, until it randomly happens again.

Rear drum car, has new parking brake cables/shoes/drums, and a new (used) handle cover. Have had the car for 5 years, and it's always done this intermittently. It's extremely startling as every time it happens, I panic thinking that I've completely broken the entire parking brake assembly.

Anyone have any ideas? Please keep in mind when replying that this a 1991, and it uses a completely different parking brake system than the 1982-89 cars.

Re: Parking Brake randomly loses all tension while pulling

Welp, if anyone cares, I was able to fix this by removing the center console, and cleaning/lubing the teeth for the ratcheting mechanism of the parking brake handle. Hasn't slipped once since.
