Would a "half-box" work?

I was looking at the well in the back of the car the other day, and I noticed that, about halfway down, it narrows somewhat and has kinda a shelf running around the perimiter. Would a box built so that it came no heigher than that shelf-looking thing be large enough for decient sound?

It depends entirely on the box volume requirements of the subs you are considering. Obviously, if you only wanted one sub the box could be half as big.

my box for my type-r 12" fits nearly perfectly into that bottom part of the well. i think it sticks up about 1/2" tops, but just because i made the bottom a tweak to large. a bit of sanding, and it'll fit perfectly. i got about a cu ft out of it and i'm sure you could get more if you were more precise. check out my sig for a link, should have a few pics of the box

I built one that doesn't even go all the way across the bottom, and i still got .82 cubic feet of space using 5/8 MDF. It goes up exactly to the shelf thing, and it fits a RF 10" HE nicely. Don't have any pics yet tho

Cool, thanks! I eventually want to get a real system for my Camaro, but I don't want to give up all of my well for subs, so if a half box will work.....

5/8 is kinda thin wood for a sub dude, i would recommend that you not use anything smaller than 3/4 for subs

yeah, i kinda skimped in some parts with 1/2" mdf, but they were small sections and heavily reinforced, so there are no problems. 3/4 mdf is the best choice for sub boxes.

You do realize that 3/4 is the same as 6/8. therfore only 1/8 thicker than 5/8...and for only 1 10" sub with 200 RMS...5/8 will work fine. But, 3/4 is always better

Oh, and i got a pic of my sub. You can't really make out how much space it takes up in the well tho...Oh well
