Just Made New Sub Box
Well I started a box for my sub today. First I tried fiberglass, that turned out like a big pile of crap (very spendy too), so I tried doing one with wood. I haven't done much with wood before, so it turned out pretty good for me. It is right around one cubic foot. Let me know what you think, oh sorry about the bad pics, I don't want to waste my money on a good camera cause I wouldn't use it much...

is that a 12 btw? and if you dont mind me asking, what dimensions did you use for the bottom part of the box, the part that fits in the well? i made some quick measurements last weekend when iw as home, and i wasnt sure i'd be able to fit a box that could house a 12 in there.. i didnt think the bottom part of the well was 12+ inches (from the back of the car moving towards the front)... does your box go all the way to the floor?

The sub is a JL 12W3. It sits all the way on the floor. The bottom demensions are 11x26, the I angled it up so the top is 14 inches wide. All the angles and stuff took me awhile. The time factor is what makes these boxes so expensive to buy. I have always wondered why they cost so much, now I finally figured it out after building one.

I haven't tried it yet cause I ran out of time. You think it would be so easy, and it probably is for some people, but for me it takes alot of time.
please tell me that that box is not made out of plywood! If it is, rebuild it with particle board, seriously. Your sound is going to be crap with any form of plywood. It is not a dense enough material and will flex way too much. You will not get the true sound quality or power handling you would if you made it out of particle board. That would be a great template for building boxes however.

I also thought it looked like plywood but i didnt think that anyone would make it out of that. That sucks that you didnt know. At least you know how to make it now. If you hook it up it will probably sound flauh(my spelling of a crappy sound). You need to make it out of 3/4 or 1" partical board. Since it is a 12 I would go with 1". Let us know how it goes once you get the partical board. BTW, partical board is pretty cheap too so dont fret it.

Yeah, it is just that I speant so much time on it. I went and got the most expensive green treated plywood I could get, and I just through away all that. grrr
guess I should just learn from my mistakes and go on.

(My English sucks

I´m also thinking of building a box and don´t want to make the same mistake!
May be some pics or something.
THEISENATOR can you tell me the exact dimensions of the box, and waht is this (see picture) for?

Your box looks pretty good, but like mentioned above, plywood isn't the best choice. I wouldn't waste my time with particle board either though. Go get a sheet of MDF and rebuild the box. Now that you struggled through the first box, the second one will go together MUCH faster, and because you'll be able to use your other box as a template, I guarantee that your next box will fit together even better. You've seen what my boxes look like on my website. You should see my first box.
I'm telling you, the 2nd box is always 100% better, and takes a LOT less time to build.

The only problem that I have with MDF(and it might just be my town) is that it is not very available and when I do find it, it is pretty pricey. Like I said above, it might just be my town. Some of my friends have MDF boxes and they are pretty sweet. If you can get it and it doesnt break your bank, I would agree with Jim, go with MDF.

I just built a box to hold a single 12, using MDF. The entire sheet of MDF only cost me 9 bucks for a 4 foot by 8 foot sheet. Lowe's rules.

9 bucks is insanely cheap. I was getting porked for $35 a sheet at the local place... and they had to ORDER it. I found another place that stocks it and gets $22/sheet. Considering that an hour drive to Home Depot will only save me about $4/sheet, I happily pay $22. I can't even get 1/2" particle board for $9/sheet!!!!
The box looks good. Your next one will go faster since you already have a template. I say go ahead and finish hooking up your sub though. You can at least try it and see how it sounds. If it doesn't sound too bad, you can at least have your sub working for you until you get the time to build a new box. When you build your next box, you'll hve a reference point to guage the improvement in sound. No reason why all that work should go to total waste. You need to get some 3/4" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) to build the next box out of. It usually runs about $20-$30 for a 4' x 8' sheet. It's very dense and is the preferred material for box bulding. As an alternative you could use birch if you wanted to save weight. To give an idea of your weight savings here are some stats on one type of it. It's basically 30% lighter than MDF and still dense enough and definitely stiff enough to work well.
Baltic Birch. It's void free, 9 layers for 1/2 inch and 13 layers for 3/4.
It's ~3.4 X the stiffness of MDF.
It weighs ~36#/cu ft. vs. ~50#/cu ft. for MDF.

Thanks for all the help guys...as far as the dimensions go, I don't really remember for sure. It would take me as long as it would take you to go out and measure it, so I would just go out there and do it if I were you. I think the bottom is 11x26, the sides are maybe 8 inches tall, the top board is like 14x41 or 44. I don't really remember for sure. Getting the dimensions is easy, it would only take a few minutes to get. So just go out and do that, you could probably do it better than I would....after all I did make a box out of plywood

I redid it today. This time it only took one afternoon instead of two. MDF is a whole lot easier to work with then plywood. The sheet of 4x8 MDF cost me 19.99 at home depot. But I think it turned out pretty good. Thanks for all the help guys.

I would post pics, but it is basicly the same box so it would look the same, just with MDF instead of plywood. I did support it more, and this one is a little wore solid than the other one. I am glad that I did it again, a few things I didn't like about the other one I fixed with this one. I am glad I had to do it again. As for the carpet, I don't know where to get any. Where do you guys get yours?
I get mine from Menards. I am sure that Home Depot and Lowe's carry it as well. Check the carpet departments. It is called auto...something. Can't remember the name but it comes in a couple of different colors. Take your time!! My first carpeting job was simply horrible! Just remember to hide your seams on the bottom and sides of the box so they are less noticeable. You will need carpet glue as well.
I have carpeted box's plenty of times, i would NOT use wood or carpet glue, as over the years, it makes the carpet fray and such...use silicone, ive used that on 4 boxes, carpet is still stuck to the sides, and non-fraying at all...

Hey guys check out this link on e-bay. Dual 10" sub box for a camaro. Might be a good pic to get ideas from. I will also be making a custom box after I get my Iroc....if I get the dam thing (want it really bad). I'm hoping I can figure out some way to cram 2 15" subs in there somewhere. I was thinking about maybe taking out the back seats? Since everyone in our family couldn't sit back there comfortably anyway.
If not the 2 15" subs are going in my dad's 98' Chrysler Concorde LXI

i dont think 15" will fit in that ebay box, mabey you could cut it to fit 12".
and to THEISENATOR:
I got black carpet from home depot, I think it was made for the floor of a patio. i used 3M spary adhesive to hold it down. You prob dont have to carpet the hole box, just the top and cruves down the sides. You wont see any of the other parts of the box.
Just an idea

I was thinking more along the lines of replacing the rear seats with the 15's. However, to save weight (and because I don't think I need 2 15's, I think I'm going to stick with 2 10's or maybe even just a single 12. But I'll by quality and hook them up to a quality amp.

I have to agree with Cuno on the fact that the box should be built out of MDF9 kinda pricey but it sounds good and is tough). Plywood will sound horrible and it is weak, could eventualy explode on ya.
I built a triangle box and it sounds great , it only harbors one 10" DVC Kenwood. It has outbalsted two 12's so I cant complain. Good luck with everything though.
