Whats your Ground

I just had a custom box built. the other day when i went through my car wiring everything up (again) i thought it wouldnt be a bad idea to just have my ground going to my spare tire. the little nut that screws down on it to keep it in place is what it is grounded to. seems to be working fine. can anyone tell me any reason why i shouldnt use that as my ground.

Because you might have to use your spare tire one day. Besides that, a stereo system, properly installed, should not interfere with the normal operation of the vehicle.

I used the big bolt towards the front of the car in the spare tire well.
and like coalyard said, it would suck if you needed to use it and you had to undo the amp hook up the tire and then try and hook up the amp again. Just put it somewhere that you can, "set it, and forget it"

Hahahahaha! Damn Fox network loves to air those disaster shows.

Anyway, I have my own grounding point question. At one point I had wired the ground for my amp to the metal bracket underneath the passenger-side rear seat. There was already a screw hole waiting for me, so I filed it bare and used that. I did have some problems with the amp when I had my headlights on (or any more-than-normal current draw on the battery), but I was never able to check the resistance of that grounding point. Does anyone know if that is a good spot to use for my reinstallation?

I suppose I'll go out and buy a multimeter, but just thought I'd ask.

hmmm, so what about the subbox that is sitting in the well?
depending on subs, it can weight anywhere from 60-120 pounds, that might interfere with getting the spare out

lol I thought the same thing after reading that! I think its all . Its more like, a properly installed stereo system should make you happy, not break or cause fire . It all depends on how far you want to take it. If you want a sub box in the hatch or spare tire well, there goes function already... Its like saying that, proper engine mods shouldnt hurt your gas mileage. Sure headers, porting etc will help your mileage, but if you want to take it further you can boot mileage out the door. Same thing with stereo systems. And another thing, grounding your system there wouldnt stop you from taking out your spare, you just couldnt listen to your music while you take the tire out thats all.

About the ground, thats the same spot I have mine grounded. No spare tire either, so I guess I got an improper sytem. heh.. I put a bit bigger bolt than stock and roughly sanded what I could to make sure its a good contact. The bolt is also longer so I could put a nut on there and tighten the ground between the nut and the bolt head.

My setup was grounded at the same place where the electric hatch was grounded at. One bad speaker took out the whole system though and now it is no more....gone....fried....broke.....pissing me off.......

okay i have a flat tire... 99.9% of people are not going to change the tire. fire up the car and start blarring there music! if you think about it... I'M going to go slow and listen to see if i hear any weird noises from that donut... I think its a good idea to ground from the spare tire... makes the ground wire short, and its just one wing nut to loosen!
