My stereo stopped working.
My stereo stopped working.
Hello, I have been having some problems with the alternator sometimes overcharging, almost up to 18 (I took it to my mechanic today and he says everything is ok). What happens is it when the charge needle shoots up, the sound stops coming out of my speakers and subs. The stereo will still be on, but just with no sound, not even static (regardless of the radio station or cd). So usually when I turn off the stereo, and turn it back on, it works until the charge gets too high. Just on friday it stopped working and now the sound won't go back on even when I turn the stereo off and back on at a normal charge! The stereo stopped working on my way to college friday morning, and it still doesn't work. I have also disconnected the battery, resetting everything back to factory settings but that didn't fix anything. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? (btw, if you need specific info about my stereo system it is in the link in the sig) Thank you!

What I think happen is that your stereo had some kinda overload protection on it. When ever the power would get to high it would go into the overload protected mode. By shutting it off then turning it back on you reset it and took it out of the protected mode. Now its shutting off cause it needs to. Since you tried to overide that so many times it probably just fried. If I were you I would open up the stereo and look for any burn circuits. I good way to solve the over charging problem is to get a amp that needs a load of power and some bad azz speakers. Just my 2 cents.

I would look at you warrenty info first...
Make sure you check the fuses by lookin inside of it at both ends not just the middle (assuming you have glass fuses). I got stumped for 3 days untill i figured out my fuse blew on an end where i coulndt see it. I was pissed royally whne i finally figure out thats all it was (after i had the whole thing apart numerous times.

Well I got some bad news. I took the car to my neighbor who installed the stereo system for me at Circuit City (now works at Best Buy) anyway he checked it out for me and the amplifier is fried
And it is out of warrantee. This is really disappointing, that amp was pretty expensive too.
I can't find my warrantee info (it is not on the box or instructions) but the new sony amps have a warrantee of one year, does anyone know if this is true for the older amps? If mine had a 2 year warrantee I could exchange it.
And thank you once again to all those who responded. I really appreciate all your suggestions and replies.

Not sure aobut the warrenty but if your replaceing it dont buy another sony. they are the most overated amps out there. Whatever wattege they claim to put out subtract about 200 from it. The only thing sony is good at is there higher end headunits that its. Otherwise everything else the make is utter junk.
You'd be better off just gettin a new one. Im not sure if you can even get them repaired but if you can it will prolly be more efficient to get a new one anyway. theres tons of amps out there. just shop arond for good quality.
Well, if you were an electronics guy it might be very cheap to repair. Depending on what blew up, it could be something as small as a cap or resistor blowing. However, the fact that you ask this says you're not an electronics hobbiest, so the point is moot.

Sony car audio rhymes with rectal wart.
(lol, sorry guys, doing this is just getting too fun
)
That's a bummer dude, yeah I agree with all that redbird said. I'd say check out what's freaky with your electrical system before you get a new amp...

YES your amp can be fixed and YES it is cost effective IF you can fined someone local that does good work at a fair price. But it will just be a repaired Sony and it will cook again.
