Stock subs in Firebird

I found these at the junkyard in a 8x Firebird... have AC Delco stamps on them, so what is it? There is a 4x6" speaker on top and a 4" speaker. Please email me if you know!

Apparently I'm wrong.

Does your buddy have an 87? This may have started in 88, I'm not sure. It's also possible that it was an option, but I didn't think it was. My GTA has the gain control slider on the dashboard to control the output level, which is part of the same system.

This may have only been part of the same system that used the steering wheel controls, which obviously didn't exist in 87. I suppose that in 90-92 models with the airbag wheel the system may have changed too.

I got a '86 TA parts car with the gain switch. It must have been an option.

it was an option, my '84 T/A had those. I threw them in the trash. and mounted 6x9"s on the cargo cover. the amp that powers the subs is under the glove box area, or where it would be under the dash. it's probably a 3 watt system and sounds like A$$. the only GM system half decent is the "monsoon" system in the fourthgens, I hate factory systems....they never sound right.

according to the gta source page the sub system in the gtas stop before 89 due to a change in wiring harness. it does not mention (that i know of anyways) when the option first appeared in gtas or any other kind of firebird.

it was not on the other hand "standard equipment" for gtas. only about 4000 or so gtas in 87-89 received the sub system (reportedly only 3 in 89). if anyone was wandering thats about 20-25% of 87s and 88s. obviously much less for 89s. i have no clue as to the numbers for other firebirds but im guessing they are even less than gtas considering the intended luxery of the gta.

jacob

p.s. oh, and those subs were powered by a seperate 30 watt amp by the way.

I have the same speaker set up in my '86 T/A. I have replaced the 4x6's but have had a hard time finding replacement 4" subs. I like my car to look stock but have a little "umph" to it.

The 4" subs have a "bostwick" logo on them, but I don't remember seeing any like that. I think Best Buy may sell them although I haven't been there in awhile.

I also have the slider "gain" control **** which still works, but the subs are shot. I was trying to find out which under console unit is actually the amp but I am not sure which unit it is. There is a blue box on the plastic slate, but I can't take it out.

Anyone know?

nobody makes 4" subs because thats stupid. rockford fosgate makes 6.75" true subwoofers, although personally im quite skeptical of them.. has anybody heard these?

anyway, if you're looking to keep a stock 4" 'subwoofer' back there, you can pick up a 4" woofer from somewhere like radioshack.. you'd be better off replacing the whole thing with some 6x9s tho, you'll get better sound and bass

Negs on the 6x9's. The 4x6's really sound great and I'm not looking to advertise my arrival five blocks before I get there. I'm 38 years old and tend to like the music just loud enough for me, not the car next to me. That's for you younger guys.

Anyhoo, I tried radio shack and they didn't have them either. They only had a dual-cone set up. I may try Best Buy or Circuit City when I get back to the US. The kicker is, that when I put in a non-stock head unit the subs will not work. So I have to go back to a stock unit. They are okay, the one that I have is a tape deck and the deck is made by Blaupunkt. I would like to replace it with a 4th gen CD head unit but I'm not sure about the wiring pattern and if it will drive the subs.

I intend to place a small amp in the T/A, that will run the 4x6's and the small subs.
Probably just a 175-300 watt one will will be enough.

Try Crutchfield, they have 4" speakers with nice ranges. I don't know if you'll ever find another "sub" though.

no company makes 4" subs. you wont even find pc speaker setups with that small a sub. 4" is way too small to be able to produce midbass, let alone bass. 6x9s arent loud. people who crank their systems are. your best bet would be to put in a decent set of 6x9s (i think kicker makes a set of 6x9 "subs") or a set of coax speakers back there. plus there is a "fader" on radios for a reason....

The only way i know of to get a sorta 4" sub, would be a component set that uses 4" speaks, and then they're still not really subs.......

Yep, I have a set of these too in my camaro. (NOT stock, BTW, from a firebird parts car that had the performance sound option)

I have a pair of rockford fosgates in them, I will grab a picture of them a little later on.

Where is the 30 watt amp located? I have the same option and i think either one speaker is bad or the amp is bad.

no clue!! sorry but i got that info from the gta source page..... www.gtasourcepage.com . i think thats it. if you go there, you can probably ask the guy that runs it. he might know or could tell you who to ask. now that i think about it, its probably under the dash somewhere but i dont have a gta or anything that i can go look at to find out.

good luck,
jacob

4"?

I have the same setup in my 85' TA and I thought that the bottom speakers were around 5" or 5.25" but I could be wrong. Anyone know how to get this setup to work using the slider switch with an after market head unit?

they are called subs by gm. they are actually producing mid bass. there are several company's out there that produce mid bass 4 in. you just have to look for them. you could probably put 5.25 components in there, but get some with mid bass specs.

thanks

the ers just has better speakers in the stock places ( ie- the 6x9's have bigger spyders and magnets, and a round surround as to the dipped in half moon type, and the 4x6's have bigger spyders and magnets also.) but the speakers are still the same size as the normal stereo. only the firebirds got that round 4" / 4x6 housing in the back. that was the equivilant of the bose system in the camaros.

thanks
anthony

Does anyone have any pics of their modified speaker boxes with aftermarket speakers? I just picked up a stock set of boxes off eBay for like 30 bucks, the stock speakers look decent, but was wanting to upgrade. And yes, the speaker diameter measures 5" with kind of odball mounting tabs...I believe that the ported enclosure with this 5" mid bass would compliment the soundstage better than 6x6's just "hanging out" using the sheetmetal of the sail panels and rear quarter as an enclosure...besides, the 2 2" rockford p2's in the well give me the lows that I'm wanting, I'm looking for a nice hitting mid bass to round out the overall sound...so any pics would be appreciated....rock on guys...thirdgen all the way!
