Where to mount an LCD screen....
Without a terrible amount of custom work... and without it getting in the way of any controls or bumping any knees, so that the front two passengers are able to see it. (Don't freak, it's not for watching movies.)
In a 91 Firebird.... where?

By the way, assuming I'm getting a standalone screen, NOT a flip-out head-unit deal.

pull out the 2 center AC vents and put it in there. You should be able to fit a 6.4" screen there and you don't really need those vents anyway.

The thought crossed my mind, but it looks like there wouldn't be a lot of room there... That would be a perfectly centered spot though....
I actually went out to the garage and sat in the car and figured that on the passenger side dash, in the front where most cars have a glove box, is a big bunch of nothing, and it's not as far away as I thought while studying the picture... I could put it on the left side of that area... I'd really like to mount it from the side so that it swings out and I can angle it towards me (the driver). I would have it mounted on the side of the screen on a hinge to the raised part of the driver's side but the LCD would hang over onto the passenger side, if that makes any sense... thoughts on this?

I suppose it could work. I'm just not into swing-out type of stuff. I like a perminant appearance. Back when I had my 86 Firebird, my plans were to put a screen in the spot where those vents are. There's PLENTY of room there for a screen.

I also like a more permanent appearance, I just don't like the idea of hacking up my car... it makes me nervous
So are you saying cut out that rectangular shape around the vents? How would I make an LCD fit there properly? Also wouldn't I have to block off the vent back there somewhere so that I don't just have hot air blowing on the back of my screen?

I'm saying remove the vents and analyze the amout of space you have available. Either buy a screen that's small enough to fit there and build a spacer plate, or buy a bigger screen and cut to fit. As for hacking it up, that plastic piece is available anywhere. Buy a spare and hack the spare.
I'm not necessarily an advocate for hacking the dash either, but drilling a few holes to mount a cheezy looking swing out screen will be harder to undo than cutting up a small panel that can be easily replaced.
No, there are no 1/2 din cd players.

Jim, ever look at the shape of the plastic on the GTA digital Dash? If you have an extra one lying around, and a haf gallon of resin, and DONT have a digital dash, theres a great central location for an LCD, and all you have to do is relocate a couple of gauges...... Thats what im shooting for.....

I've got a spare digital dash sitting in my garage, although I don't have the plastic trim ring for it. I used to have an 86 firebird with an analog dash, so I'm familiar with both styles. The spot on the digi dash that has the information panel is kind of small. You probably won't fit more than a 4" screen there. The a/c vents on the analog dash should provide enough room for at least a 5.5" screen with minimal modification.

Do you know of anybody that has done this before? Have pics? I'd love to see what it looks like. (Suppose I could Photoshop it, but I want to see if it's been done)
