Its been years since I had my Alpine setup and I have had no problems. There are other brands that are out there so I'm sure you can get more opinions. The trick is getting it INSTALLED correctly.
Whatever you do, DON'T get any type of alarm system that uses the car horn for a siren! You will not realize its your car alarm going off because at first you will think its somebody being ignorant. Also, the horn is usually not covered by the alarm warranty. So if the horn goes, you pay to get it fixed. If the horn is located underneath an airbag then you have to pay the hundreds of bucks to have them reset it.
The starter kill is the most important thing and is usually standard.
You can also get a motion sensor installed that goes off if it detects movement inside your car. This is great when you have T-tops or leave the windows down. Most alarms now have pagers.
All in all, you should be able to get a decent setup for less than $300 installed. Hope this helps.

I'm looking at a alpine sysyem, I has a bottun for the power locks, but I dont have power locks so I'm also going to have them instal the device to make my manual locks work with the remote for locking/unlockings, It's $300 for the alram/instal plus lock parts.

the alpine with with the prox is model number sec 150 i believe, its nice especially since it comes with the prox . The viper alarm I think you are talking about it the viper 600. Both are great alarms the only down side is the viper doesnt come with the prox and for the viper its 120 bucks. If you are gonna do the door lock actuators with the alpine your gonna need a door lock relay (model 451m at circuit city). The viper 600 has the relay built into the brain. And I wouldnt worry about the door lock actuators, if somebody does get your transmitter (bummer for you) then most likely they have your keys too! Unless you dont plan on keeping the remote on your keychain. Hope this helps, Jered

Keyless entry is very convient and I wouldn't want an alarm installed unless it had the feature connected.
Most every recent car alarm utilizes some sort of "rolling code" system which makes "cloning" your remote fob next to impossible. For more info look here:

IMO I don't recommend getting the door lock relays. If someone gets lucky enough to get your transmitter or figure out your alarm frequency, then they can get inside your car that much easier.

I have the micro wave which is different from motion detector. the micro wave goes as soon as there is any break in the invisible band that surrounds your car. There fore if someone reaches into your car with the T Tops off it will set the alarm. with the motin detector sometimes they could make it intto the car before it is activated by body movement. don't get an alarm without the microwave feature if you keep your tops off a lot. Also don't get an alarm without a cut off feature. that is a must have.
