Whats wrong here

On my way home from school yesterday, with the volume at about 20, my subs suddenly stopped. When I got home, I checked the amp, and the green power light was on; but the subs were not. I shut the car off, and checked the all fuses. They all checked out ok, so I turned the car back on and the subs worked again. This morning, when I was on my way to school they were working and then once again; quit. When I was leaving school they worked, and yet another time they stopped. When I got home, I checked everything again. I thought it might have been the remote turn on wire, but it was in tight. The power light on the amp was on, yet the subs did nothing. I turned the car off, and turned it back on; hoping to have the same luck as the previous times.. nothing. I pulled the RCA's from the back of the amp, and toched the ends to an old speaker I had, to see if the problem was coming from the RCA's, amp, or subs. The speaker did not play; so I figured the amp and subs must be ok. I then tried powering an old 6x9 with the preamp outputs on the back of the deck. Nothing happened. Are my preamp outputs bad? What else could be the problem?

I'm running a fairly new JVC KD-SX980 and an Xplod 300W x 1 D class amp with 12" Sony Xplod subs. I'm also running 4 guage wire to the distribution block, and 8 guage from the block to the cap, to the amp.

it could be you rca's but you cant just touch your rcas to a speaker and expect it to play. it doesnt work like that. you might have something going on with the HU. i dont know but i hope you find your problem. i know how it feels to loss your bass. not fun when you have gotten used to it. its almost like you are in another car.

good luck,
jacob

Ok, I just went away.. I turn the stereo on and the subs now work. I won't hold my breath though, they will probably stop working tomorrow. We'll see.. Any more ideas on why my system is playing this game with me?

My friend has a Sony amp (yes I still call him my friend :sillylol: ) and it cut off after he tried to run two 4 ohm subs in parallel bridged to a 2 channel amp. Did I mention I still call him my friend?

IIRC, (obviously) his amp went into thermal protection, but the little green LED turned yellow. Kinda hard to tell in daylight if it was green or yellow though. I guess only good amps use red.

“and an Xplod 300W x 1 D class amp” That’s your problem, buy a amp worth your money, Sonys aren’t. You may have also killed you HU by trying to power speakers with the pre-amp outputs!

yup. Everybody argues with me when I put down sony until they find themselves with an amp that keeps tripping the protection circuitry every time they turn it up.

Problem 1. Sony.....

Problem 2. 300.1, HAHahahaHahahahaha

Sorry man, but that is a really crappy setup.
I'm sure you are just overloading the protection circuit...

OK, first off. Although my setup is 'crappy' it was free. Free is one heck of alot cheaper than anything else I've heard of. I don't turn my subs loud enough to where they shake the car either. I just like the little bit of extra bass. Also, I tightened all the connections again and its working great. The HU is not killed. And the amp has'nt gone into thermal protection or over heated yet. Crappy? maybe it is. Free? that it is too. Would you rather have no system? I dont think so.

My brother's sony amp was doing the same thing. It kept kicking on the current overload light and killing the subs. Turned out one of the subs had a loose wire. Tightened it up and now all seems to be well. Except, that is, for the fact that it's all still sony.

hmmm...

It could be the subwoofer it's self. Take it out to see if one of your speaker wires came off. I have a 12" shocker II with a jbl 1200.1 going to it and every clip broke over a period of time so every time one snapped i had to solder the the wire right to the bitch. Take a look though.
