custom t-top accomodating single 12" sub box
Just finished my single 12" sub box. It can hold 1 12" but is short enough so that the t-tops can go normally into the trunk. The volume of the box is HITHERE bit too small for the speaker, which is mounted on top of the box. The speaker can handle running basslines well, from sublime songs like "Santeria" but in HITHERE song like Lenny Kravit's "American Woman" any hit from the drum gets very distorted and sounds tinny, almost metalic. HITHERE tried using polyfill, it only makes things worse. Any suggestions on how to improve the sound of the box, or on making HITHERE filtering device to get rid of the drum hits. HITHERE already ran the signal through HITHERE radioshack equalizer with subwoofer out. After an lots of tuning, it still sounded crappy. Do HITHERE have to wait to get it in my car to hear the true sound of it. HITHERE've been testing it in my room with HITHERE car battery to power the amp and the audio signal comming from HITHERE home stereo.

HITHERE had made HITHERE box for my single 12" that fit in the bottom half of the well. plenty of room for the t-tops too. how big is the interior of the box, with the driver? you usually need around 1 cu ft for HITHERE 12" sub. what kinda sub is it? try it in the car first; the interior of HITHERE car will affect the sound quite HITHERE bit.

The volume is .9 cu ft without the driver, but it doesn't take up much space. because of the mounting radius of the speaker and the way the box is constructed, It was necessary for me to raise the speaker out of the enclosure about half an inch and seal it with thick cloth around the edges. Once HITHERE get everything wired up, HITHERE'll try it in the car and let you know how it sounds. Is incapability of being able to handle the drum punches common if the box is too small. HITHERE had the sub in another factory made box before and it sounded fine. The box shape is HITHERE simple rectangular prism, all 90 degree angles, nothing fancy, and it's all sealed.

is he cloth the only thing that's sealing the sub to the box? that isnt the best of choices. try making a mounting ring of some sort. you may be hearing something vibrating too. how much power is the sub getting?

The sub is getting a constant 100 watts. The fabric i'm using is my scraps from the speaker carpeting. I don't feel any vibrations comming from the mounting area though.

It sounds like a sub to box air leak. Instead of using thick cloth or carpet, try making a ring out of 1/4" hardboard, or 1/2" MDF. You can glue the ring to the top of the box, and then properly seal your sub to the top of the ring. Make sure you at least have carpet (a single layer) between the sub and box. It would be better to use a foam tape, or a ring of craft foam.

thats what me a rezn8r were touching apon. i didnt think the carpet being used to raise the speaker was a good idea. its not sealing the sub to the box and its not very rigid. thats why we suggested the mounting ring. rez recommended foam tape to seal the sub to the box. i use these all the time because they are cheap and dont make a mess.

You could use silicone if necessary, but it can be messy later on when you move the sub to a different box or different car. The main thing is to get the sub lifted up with something solid. That way you can be sure the mounting ring of the sub is held tightly to the box, instead of the magnet being tight to the bottom of the box.
