custom dash idea. What do you think?

I am wondering if you think this would actually look ok, as well as be functional.

I am covering my dash in black "pleather" to match my black leather interior, and I was thinking about flush mounting the 4x6's instead of dropping them in their normal spot. The speakers grill would be flush, but it would give me some extra room in there, say if I wanted to run 5's. What do you think? It seems to me if I ripped all of the old hardware out of there and actually attached it to the dash and made a brace plate underneath it, it would be a good combo, would look nice, and would give better sound.

By the way would be usinga junkyard dash, not hacking up my own as it would take some considerable hacking

what do you think? How big could I get in there?

Order some kicks from REZ and eliminate the speaker grilles altogether.

Way too tall and way too small in my car for kick panels and honeslty even if I had them in there I would still put the 4x6's. the louder the better. Do you think the setup would look ok though? It should raise it up a good 1" giving me more space for a truly custom install.

Well, I never minded the dash speakers, so that's one. Im 6'2" - 6'3" without the shoes that's two. Three my legs already rest in those areas. IE My knee's are around the steering wheel as it is. I still don't see how there is much of a difference between speakers at your feet that are blocked by your body and trapped in essentially a box, or open speakers from the dash. How does it make that much more of a difference?

I don't believe flush mounting 4x6s will sound any different then there normal spots. You can pretty much fit in a 4" component set with little effort. Now if you wanted to put in 5.25 or 6.5s, that would be better. I had some 3" deep MB Quarts sitting loosly in the dash and they pretty much sat level with the top of the dash. If you could raise the top of the dash .5" you would proably be able to mount them and the grills flush with the dash. Its the driver's side that has all the problems with depth, pass side is a breeze.

I know about kicks and big feet Right now I'm working on making my own similar to the Bose kicks. So far it looks like there will be sufficient foot room with them installed.

Hi justin,

I was thinking about going with 5's. After looking at the dash I dont think it would look that much different and would fit a much better speaker. Thinking of 5's in the dash, 5's in the door, 6x9's in the back (already set up a custom way to get them in the vert) Tweeters in the top of the doors. Don't like too much bass

What do you think?

James

If you are going for shear volume, I'd say put in as big and as many speakers as you can. However for sound quality, I would advise you not to run both speakers in the doors and speakers in the dash, unless you have them crossovered so that they don't play the same frequencies. One idea you might want to look into is a-pillar tweeters. I hear that they can make a tremendous difference in SQ, as long as they are crossed over above 5kHz. And i'd go for 6.5"s in the doors if possible, with a good amount of RMS power.

..... but scratch out the "almost" part.

6'3" ........ size 13 work boots, and I'm still OK with them. Although it does get a little bothersome on long trips when I can't stretch my left leg anywhere except behind the brake pedal.

Your dash idea sounds great. Don't think I'm trying to discourage you, but just so you know... EVERYONE that's heard mine say "what kind of tweeters you got in the dash?" *muhahaha*

I don't have any in the dash.

i'd have to see a pic of what you want to do but i think i get the general idea i'd go kick panels if you want 5's but i don't know about the flush mount thing i've never seen it done.
