Brahma Subs

Hey all, I'm pretty new into car stereos, and understand how to wire and everything, but I need to take a step up in my system. Right now I have a sony 780 watt amp and two sony 10's, basically cheap stuff in a board lying across the hatch...no flaming, I know it's cheap. Well anyways, i'm going to have around 500 or 600 dollars and was wondering if I could use my sony 780 and a custom box to run 1 brahma 12, or does one brahma 10 hit just as hard? The brahmas are 1600 RMS and I know my amp isn't near that, is that alright?. I'm not really looking to win comps I just want lots of loud clean bass. Also, how much help would a box do to my current setup? I have a friend who builds boxes so I can get one from him for relatively cheap. I used to just want bass, but now I want it to look clean

that sub is quite a bit too much for that amp. You will have better results going with a couple of subs that are better rated for the amp. Most on this board as well as myself will suggest the Alpine Type R subs.

If you desperately want to spend that $600 maybe consider buying a couple of Type R's and a new amp. If you do not want to buy a new amp maybe invest in 4 of the Type R subs. It is easy to fit all 4 in a sealed box(or 2) in the hatch of a Camaro.

I dont really understand that reply. Get a new amp and a couple of type r's, or get just 4 type r's? Im sorry but that sony amp wouldnt even touch 4 type r's I'd just buy like 2 10" or 12" type r's, and a JBL amp or something like that. I dont think that your sony amp would be able to even come close to giving that brahma the power that it needs.

i picked up a 900.1 pheonix gold new for 300 bucks, good deals are to be found when you have cash in your hand.

alpines are not great subs, if i remember correctly they are made by pioneer,
i would personally never buy anything pioneer, (well, i have to admit those new yellow 6.5's they have sound GOOD)

i would go with two he2 rockford 10s and a good box.

rockfords, in my opinion, take the most punishment for the money.

just stay away from the Z series.

Alright, thanks. I think I'm going to get 2 12" HE2's. I know some people that work at best buy so I can get them for about 200 for both of them. By the way, my sony was pushing enough when turned down half way to blow 1 of my sony 10's, so I don't think I'd need a new amp for just 2 Alpine Type R's.

Have you thought about saving up money for a new amp to go along with the brahma? IMO RF isn't in the same league. The sony amp might be able to push a brahma for a while but it would be on borrowed time, not to metion the SQ of the sub would probably be deminished.

That is true if he is running a cheapo amp, but if he is running a mono amp or even a 2ohm stable amp there should be no problem giving the Alpine's the power they need. He didn't give any specs on the amp so I am unsure why you jump to the conclusion there will not be enough power. 780 watts does not really give us any clear idea of what amp it is. Is that easier to understand?

It may have been a while since you looked into Alpine subs. Alpine subs are probably the best sub for the money that can be bought today. I as well as others use or have used them for competition...I myself hit 143.6db running RF Punch amps.
Here is a link to the specs on them http://www.alpine-usa.com/html/D2_n_1_n_n.html

For the same price as the RF subs, you can get the Alpine subs(if you search around) and tehy are much better quality..IMHO. I would recommend looking into the Trpe R subs before investing in the RF subs.

Just because your amp sucks doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy the Brahma. The Brahma still has a sensitivity that's in the same ball park as other subs, so it'll get just as loud with your amp as most other subs will.

But, the Brahma will sound a lot better, and when you get the money to upgrade, you can buy a more powerful amp and be better off all around. The Brahma is a fantastic sub and you'll never find anything with anywhere near the sound quality for that price.

While I agree with you that the brahma is a great sounding sub at a nice price there are a few other subs with the same potential far around that price or less. RE HC's (which uses some same technologies as the Brahma), Audio mobile (well was but now they are MIA) Elemental designs A series.

trust me, i think that they are good subs, just overrated, everyone says they are the best thing since sliced bread.

i have had one alpine type r. i pushed about 800rms into it and it blew, it sounded good until it went, but it did go.

now, here comes the "these subs were never meant to hold that kind of power" speach. i know, but i had to know what the sub would hold, and i had just taken out a rockford fosgate HE2 10"

the 10 hit almost as hard, and lasted MUCH MUCH longer at similar power levels.

rockford HE2's, especially the older designs if you can find them, are some of the best subs for the money. IMHO.

I agree, they aren't the best subs...but for the price, they are hard to beat. I would prefer a few JLW6 subs, but the price difference is huge! I have stayeed away from RF subs for the last 4 years or so after I had purchased 2 that were faulty from the factory. After they sent me the replacements the cone on one seperated from the surround within a week. I have a buddy who runs them and swears by them...it is just my personal experience that they are not as good quality as the Alpine subs.

everyone has opinions and experiences,

ive had an he2 that freaking HIT, and replaced it with a type r that blew, now i have a different amp with mtx thunder 8000 12's

i know alot of people happy with 8000's but im not, it doesnt handle the power it should, and sends my amp into protection at moderate volume levels.

mtx isnt my fave, but others have had great experiences with them.

The jury is out on the audiomobile stuff (but since the owner went to work for Eclipse and apparently put a padlock on the Audiomobile business and leaving hundreds of orders & repairs hanging, it's now a moot point), but the REs and Elemental subs have a very good reputation. But, I haven't seen too many people say that they prefer the sound quality of the EDs or REs. Most will give the nod to the RE's for SPL, and the nod to the Brahmas for the sound quality. The new EDs aren't out yet, so all we can do is speculate over those.
