Need help with Playstation Install

I know you're not supposed to put sony stuff in your car, but I couldn't help it The problem I've run into is that the Aux in for my head unit is already being used for my cd changer. So I patched the playstation into the RCAs going to the amp for the 6x9s, but damn it's loud. What is the best way to control the volume since it won't run through the head unit? I was thinking of just getting a cheap EQ and running the audio for the playstation through it and then using the fader as a volume control. Is there a simpler (and preferably cheaper) way to do this? Thanks, Joe

what head unit do you have? why dont you use a y-connector and have both your cd-changer and PSOne hooked up that way. some companies actually sell adapters that allow you to hook up more than one aux, just dont remember who. you could always put in a potentiometer on the wire, but that may be more hassle then its worth

It's a blaupunkt tampa bay head unit. It's only got one input connector, which you use either for the cd changer or for an external input. I did just put a Y in the RCAs so that the psone and the head unit could feed to the amp. But without volume control for the psone, it plays at max volume which is WAY too loud. I checked best buy and radioshack, neither had anything to attenuate the signal for RCAs. I'd thought about just adding a variable resistor, but then I'd end up with 2 volume *****, and it'd end up being really difficult to balance the volume of the left and right channels.

If they are using RCA connecters then just go to Radio Shack, or any electronics store and buy a Y-adapter as mentioned. You can pretty much hook up ANY amount of sources that way, it does have drawbacks, but it WILL work perfectly in your case. Just make sure you shut the CD player off when playing PSO, and the PSO off when playing the CD changer.

The problem is not getting sound from the playstation, it's not getting so much of it that when I play tony hawk 2 and he breaks through glass I get a splitting headache.

from what i gather, you have the y-splitter hooked up to the input of the amp. what i'm trying to say is move the y-splitter to the input jack(s) on the deck. that way you have the volume control. or is it a special type of input jack on the deck?

This is my head unit:

This is what the back of the blaupunkt head units look like:
<img src="http://www.blaupunktusa.com/receivers/receivers_imgs/heidelberg_back_500.jpg">

The top right group of 9 pins is for the cd changer/Aux in. You can either use a changer or a cable with that connector that then has a 3/8" stereo plug on it (for connecting things like MP3 players) I have the Y cables connected so that the line level out of the head unit, and the line level out of the playstation connect to the RCA cables that then run to the amp in the back of the car.

So basicly what I'm looking for is something to plug in between the playstation and the Y cable that will give me volume control.

yeah, i checked out crutchfield right after i answered and i saw that you have to use an adapter or cd changer. hmm.... best thing i can think of is get a potentiometer in-line with your cable. dont know what value you would use though.... check out www.carsound.com and see if anyone knows there. you'll get your best answer (hopefully) there

Random stab in the 'ol dark, and I know it's not the -best-, but what about an FM modulator? Inline with the antenna wire? Not as clean as going in thru the aux, but would it matter?

:hail: TomP:hail: That may well be the way I go. I can actually get a TV tuner with built in FM modulator for $99. I found a clarion EQ on ebay that's $20 right now, and I'll probably do that since it has a selectable aux in and sub volume control, which I'd like to have but the JBLs don't have remotes for the amps But if it gets to more than like $35 then I'll probably just do the FM modulator. Thanks again Tom!

the modulator completely skipped my mind. good idea. i had a clarion in-dash eq that had dual inputs. loved the thing. still have it, but the jerks that stole the rest of my old system blew something inside it. either option would work well.

I'm not sure that the cost of FM modulator would justify itself for what you are doing. (a Clarion FM modulator is like $80). You most likely be better off just buying an EQ that has aux RCA inputs.

Actually....There are TV tuners with built in FM modulators for ~$100

BUT!
I found what I was looking for all along!
http://www.installer.com/acc/index.html#

Of course everyone's great suggestions got me thinking, and now I've got to have the clarion EQ, and the TV tuner. And hey, might as well do DVD while I'm at it right?
