How do you install speakers? (BEGINNER)

Hi, I was wondering what size speakers I could put into my 86 trans am? I just want to replace the old speakers with new ones. That's all. I dont know what size speakers to replace with my old factory speakers. How do I wire up new speakers in place of old ones? Thanks.

If you just want new speakers (and your wires aren't causing you any trouble) then yeah...the wires plug right onto the speaker prongs. Unplug them...and you may need to buy new plugs that are specific for your year/make of car and then clip onto the new speakers. The stereo shops usually have them for a few dollars each. Do a search on here before you buy, though...I've seen a lot of posts about clearance problems under the dash on the Firebirds with aftermarket speakers. I bought Polk 4x6's for the Camaro...you have to remove the dash pad to get to them, and then I had to make a spacer to go between the speaker and the mounting bracket to lift it enough so the magnet wouldn't hit underneath. Some guys just hack and cut and generally butcher anything under the dash that the speaker hits..but that ain't my way.
