Help! new radio wont work!

Ok, so I am in the process of installing a sony head unit into my 92 RS. I got the adapter for the harness, and the antenna adapter too. The factor radio worked, just not very well. In fact it would only work if the headlights were turned on. Upon removal of the old radio, i found a thin black wire in 2 pieces, so i spliced it back together. There was also a pink wire..probably 18 gauge or so, that was just loose, and there was also an empty spot on one of the factory radio plugs.

What is the pink wire for, and does it have anything to do with why the new radio isnt working, period? The HU is a Sony CDX L350 that was in my old car. Its about 2 years old, and worked when removed. Im wondering if the fuse on the HU is bad?

Any ideas?

BTW-Yes, i know sony is junk, i just had it lying around, and figured it was better than no music at all.

TIA guys

Its good that you know sony is junk Did you try the sony with the headlights on? Maybe there is a short somewhere away from the deck.
Just a thought

I tried the sony with the lights on, and it still didnt work. I did put a new fuse in it, and when i turned the key to the run position, i t whirred and buzzed, and then died. That almost makes me think the deck is bad. Is there a fuse under the dash for the radio as well?

Today i took the hush panel out to get at the fuse block. There was NO fuse in the spot for the radio fuse. I got the fuse from autozone and put it in. Now when i hit the key, it whirs still, but for about twice as long.

Just out of curiousity, I plugged the factory deck in, and it does the same thing. It turns on for a few seconds, then dies.

yeah, the crossed wire thing had crossed my mind. In typical thirdgen fashion, the radio connectors were cut off and new ones spliced on somehwere along the line, maybe someone screwed up doing that? Maybe I'll take a look in the junkyard for an 88-up GM car with a radio, and see about getting new connecotrs and start over.

You dont need to go to a junkyard for the original harness. You can pick one up at a local stereo shop, they are usually refered to as a "reverse harness"
