New idea in security for trunk subs.

I'm not nearly close to being at the point where I can try this out on my own car yet, but I believe it's something that somebody could try here. I've read a number of posts lately about our cars getting broken into and various stereo item being stolen. It's just plain wrong, I know... you just don't mess with another man's car (or woman's, but I'm quoting Pulp Fiction here). So here's the idea.

I have a custom fit sub box for two tens for my hatch well (don't even think about breaking into my car, would-be thieves. it's not in there). It ends up sitting flush with the rest of the hatch area when it's in. My thought would be to build a custom fit box where the four sides of the box rise up to be flush to the rest of the hatch, and the top piece with the mounting holes would cover the entire length of the hatch, all the way to the rear seats. Then have carpet custom cut to cover everything in one molded piece. Use tamper resistant torx or hex screws to mount your speakers, and you even have a place to screw down your amps and other equipment. Install cargo shade and you're set. What do you think?

That is a good idea similar to what I am doing. I have the amplifiers installed inside the back seats right now. I am making a fiberglass molded sub box with a passive radiator that will sit down inside the trunk well and will be below where the top is. Do not restrict your designs for a sub box to the regular mounting ways. Best audio book you can buy is Vance Dickersons Speaker design cook book. I got snake eye screws that have two shallow holes on the top that a special bit driver fits into. If the seats are up, CD faceplate is off and the security cover is off, you cannot see any sound equipment at all.

I'm in the process of making a custom box for my hatch. The subs are going to be mounted vertically and facing outwards. When looking into the hatch it will look completely flat, and you can't see the speakers, except the baffle holes. It's going to be a tight fit but I believe it will work.

The main reason I'm doing this is so that if anybody ever breaks into my car (knock on wood) and they can't get the subs out they can't just take a knife to them. The top part will be piano hinged and have 2 locks on it, and the box will be bolted from underneath the car.

My roommate made a box with this same design almost for his truck with 2 10's, and it pounded harder than it did in a bandpass box with the correct amount of airspace.

id like to point out that a theif doesnt care if he has to distroy stuff to get to what he wants.

ive gotten my newly redone sail panels ripped out of my old camaro just so they could steal my $9.99 Road Gear walmart special speakers.

the first best deterrant is not letting them know its there. not only does that mean making them not visable, but also, turn down your stereo before you get to that dark street you're gonna park on.

Damn.. if you ever find them, kick their butt twice. Once for breaking into your car, and once for being stupid.

D M N: no, those are the Q-Logic boxes that are basically the same design as something that drops into the rear hatch. My design would be done with the carpet out, and basically make the entire rear hatch one long, flat space with subs mounted towards the rear. It would be your basic hatch well box with a very large top, extending to the rear seats. Then carpet the entire thing.

Tibo: I've always liked the idea of amps in the rear seats, but I'm worried about overheating problems. Beside, it's not too hard to take out the top half of our rear seat. Just a thought.

Faded: I like your idea a lot! One thing you could do is forget about even putting a hinge on the top. Just screw the whole thing all together and drop the box in. You'd have to remove the ENTIRE box just to get your subs out.

MrDude_1: Now that you mentioned it, it kinda sucks that a thief could simply stab a hole in my subs with my design. Faded's idea could probably fix that, but I'm all about SQ, and it's pretty hard to find a bandpass box like that with a relatively flat frequency response. The way I see it, a thief would either break into my car or not, so it's a 50-50 chance. But if he can't get anything out of the car, there's another 50-50 chance that he'll feel compelled to destroy them. So I guess I'd be raising the chance that my equipment would survive a break-in intact.

TomP: Quit post whoring all over the boards, dammit! You're gonna have more posts than miles on your car soon. We're always helping each other out here and there, I have to come down and check out your ride.

I HAD pretty much the exact set up your describing - down to the torx screws> the theifs made short work of it with the crow bar. They used it for everything - i can not imagine that anything was worth a damn the way they ripped it all out. if they cant have it they will distroy it.

edit - in regards to original posters idea.

How you think it would look with 18"s mounted that way in the hatch? Audio shop is gonna build me a box kind of like that next Tuesday except it's going to branch out and take up extra space above the tank area too for more air space.

Yeah, I was the one that found that page and posted the pics on here awhile back.

Wonder if he really had to run the 5 yellow tops... I'm gonna run 1 for the sound system and a conventional for the motor. I guess I'll see how long that lasts...

All ive got is a standard battery for the engine and the main amp plugged into something to the side of it, not sure where, and the small stupid amp on the battery itself

I put my stupid alarm in valet mode by holding the button down for 3 seconds, now it says do the same to disable it, but it wont and my alarm is stuck in valet... Any ideas how to fix it?

I have exactly what you are talking about
I have a peice that goes all the way to my back seats....and it is torque wrenched down. It is carpeted and everything.. I had it made for me, I have the shade too. I have had no problems with anyone trying to steal mine...I will try to get some picks next time I'm at the garage where she is hibernating for the winter

Can anyone tell me where to get the thing that covers the box when it is in ur trunk. I got an 86 ta and am about to put a box in it and would like to hide it ebcause i know how easy our cars are to break into. Also anyone in jersey here that could install alarms. I bought my alarm from ebay not thinking it would of been less oney to buy one from a place and have them install it.

I got mine from my other car that had it stock, but later replaced it at a picknpull junkyard, but its kinda hard to add it to one that didnt do it. I got my system, but refused to put it in till i converted it over, but i finally did it. If you look at one with it, it has round connector thingsy that you have to add. I thought it would be simple, just cut the hole and put it on, not really. The ones with it have a box type piece of metal with screw holes in it to screw that to, I wish they all did to save time on the assembly line, but they dont. I had to pry it off my old one, its kinda calked on, so it sucks... I put calkd it onto my new car and I was too lazy to cut the hole and mess up, so I just took the panels out of my car that did have the holes in it, and swapped all that. From a junkyard that could get pricey... But then on the bottom of the hatch you have to have the plastic piece with the metal piece in it with the grooves to hook it to, and i just swapped it over too. The one with the grooves didnt have the little thing for the tail light, so i just cut a hole in it with a keyhole saw. then you should just be able to put the cover on. I would provide pics, but i didnt take em as i did it, and i dont have a camera at the moment. This sounds sorta hard, but its not too bad... Just took me a few to do it because i didnt know what i was doin, lol...

Bye :lala:

Oh, like this? Already been done. The box is bolted to the hatch cover, and the cover is bolted to the car body. They ain't gonna steal it!
