Kenwood eXcelon Subs

What's up fellow Thirdgen owners...I just ordered plans for a custom box from Subenclosures.com and I'm thinking about changing out my old 10"s. I'm looking to continue keeping everything Kenwood so I'm interested in the eXcelon subs. I have the old tornados and they bottom out too much. Does anyone own (or has anyone heard) the KFC-XW1005dB subs? If anyone has any input, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and for your information this is the eXcelon sub with one 4-ohm voice coil, not the duals. Thanks.

staying with one brand gives you absolutely NO benefit.

There are far better choices for the money.

check out www.edesignaudio.com there subs dont have a logo on them so you dont have to worry about clashing brands

www.partsexpress.com- they sell daytons which are cheap, and great drivers for the money, i believe there are "logoless"

there are planty of drivers out there... what kind of power does your amp put out. we'll be better able to serve you if you give us power and your budget

I have a KAC-829 Kenwood amp which pushes out 600 watts max. I'm not going for the greatest sound in the world. I found those eXcelon subs online for pretty cheap so that's what I'm lookin' at. Has anyone heard these things? Any comments? These are the ones I'm talking about.

I've heard them, If thats what you like and want them go for it. I think people always get caught up in the "yeah their ok but these subs are better" thing. As long as your not asking about pyramid subs . lol

there's a reason for that.

The last place I worked at sold kenwood, but we didn't waste shelf space with their subs. I've seen very few audio shops (other than BB and CC) that carries them. Most shops have many other brands that provide better quality for the same money, so they don't bother stocking the cookie cutter crap.

Well, I've been to alot of Audio stores the stock the "cookie cutter crap." Personally I really like Kenwood, but it doesn't seem to be a favorite around here. So JIM85IROC, what subs would you recommend?

Personally, I like JL Audio, Image Dynamics, Adire, ED, Resonant Engineering and plenty of others. I'm also going to try a Dayton Audio sub from Parts Express one of these days. I've heard great things about them. Alpine and Infinity have some good sounding subs.

But regardless of what I like, what I suggest is that you go listen to a lot of brands, and listen to them in places that have them in the RIGHT BOX, instead of places like CC that just slap them into whatever prefab box they have laying around. I'm just trying to get you to open up your options and take the time to listen to subs before you just jump into buying the kenwood because the rest of your stuff is all kenwood. That's a lousy way to make purchasing decisions and leaves you with a system that never lived up to its potential.

Ok, thanks for all the info and opinions guys. I'm gonna have to go and check out diff brands of subs around here. Options are kinda limited though here in Gallup. Anyways, thanks again and I'll ask about that new Kenwood sub you're talking about blyth18md.

Hey Jim, I hope you're still takin' a look at this post cuz I got a question for ya. You said that Alpine makes pretty good subs? Well, I'm lookin' at the Alpine SWR-1041D. It's supposed to be thier best 10" sub out there. Lemme know what you think...And to blyth18md, I payed a visit to Paradise Village (audio store here) today and they have those new Kenwood monster subs in. One was a 13 inch woofer and the other was an 11 inch. The magnets on those things are freakin' HUGE!!! The 13" sub was $650. Don't know what they sound like though cuz they weren't mounted in a box yet.

That part number doesn't mean anything to me. Last time I sold Alpine stuff was when their best subs were the Type R subs. I don't know if that's still the case or if they've moved on to new marketing gimmickry. In any case, the Type R subs are good sounding subs.

yeah the type rs are awesome for the price. ikesound has em for only a 100 bucks which is a very good deal. unless you grab a new pair from a rummage sale for 80 like me.

yeah but for 5.50 more you can get a 12 unless of course you already have a box for a 10

Actually sparty, I just ordered plans from Subenclosures.com for a MDF box that will house 2 8", 2 10", or 2 12" inch subs. Would you recommend the 12"s ? I'm looking for tight, punchy bass...not the low rumbling sound. I thought 10"s would be used more for my taste.

yeah i agree with the tens being more punchier but i actually find my two 12s to be very tight and low both. i really like them alot. and i am into classic rock and rock not much rap so i am not into that reallly low bass but sometimes i like to shake the car.
