I have never seen a box like that before... and it gets me thinking. Would a bandpass sound good in that small space? I just might have to try that!

no thanks, the box looks like crap. Not to mention the speakers it comes with are trash. For the space that box takes up you could have a sealed box with two 12's! Sure a bandpass box can sound great BUT it has to be properly built and they are one of the hardest boxes to make correctly.

yes, ill have to agree. A proper bandpass box is designed to the speakers T/S specs. So buy a prebuilt bandpass box, is more often than not a waste.
A he said you'd see much better results from 2 12's sealed, than an 8 in a box that it wasnt designed for...
It looks interesting..but i wouldnt go for it.

IMO bandpass boxes really arent worth the time and especially arent worth the space. They're just too big especially for use in a 3rd gen where space is not plentiful. They can get loud but take far too much time and planning to make them correctly.

a good ported box is the way to go for most applications

I got my bandpass box for $110 almost a yr ago and hits harder then my friends 12's or 10's with better amps.

i got a Jensen bandpass box with 2 10's, Jensen 400watt 4channel amp (set only half way on everything) and it hits hard as hell for only on half power.

one friend had a jensen 10 and 12 another has i think sony explode 12's (cant rememeber for sure though). my friend with the 10 and the 12 had them hooked up to a pionerr 200watt amp (but not at the same time) in his 87 gta that he had. other kid has a 91 honda civic with the i think 1 or 2 12's not sure though but he has a jensen 600 watt amp.

i gotta see if my set up is better then my friends 84 z28 with a custom box he made with 2 10'' rockford subs and amps (i think). havent heard his system yet.

having your amp at only 1/2 gain doesnt mean its necessarily putting out less power. If you turn your gain up all the way it wont be too much louder, but it will have a lot more distortion which many people confuse with SPL

Well, that's why your system out-pounds them... you're comparing not much to not much else. It doesn't mean buying a pre-built bandpass box is a good idea.

bandpass boxes generally dont sound that good to begin with. A prefab bandpass box is just the worst of the worst.

If you have a whole lot of space, time, patience, and knowledge you can make a bandpass box that will sound really good though.

IMO ported is always best

my bandpass box has sounded better then most open enclosures ive heard and not just my friends cars, which all had open enclosers with ports on (im guess in the big ol holes inthe boxes), it depends how u have everything hooked up, and tuned right and not misatching parts.

yes tuning does make a big difference...but what do you mean by mismatching parts?

like you have a sony amp , eclipes sub, kmart brand headunit and also all the wires u use, depending on the quality of them.

a sony amp will work just as good with an eclipse sub as an eclipse amp providing their the same quality. Matching brands isnt at all necessary. Generally speaking, wire is wire...i use welding cable as my power and ground wire and its just as good as any car audio power wire at 1/4 the price

when you look at SQ competitors you NEVER see bandpass boxes. In SPL competitions it comes around once in a blue moon, usually because the owner is just comparing how much louder his ported setup was.

I had one of those jenson bandpass boxes in my 92 celica . It hit pretty decent but the sq was horrible(as expected). For someone wanting a cheap setup that will rattle your mirrors, its decent...

but you can still make your own box with good SQ and SPL for $20 or so. Its cheaper and performs better, it doesnt look nearly as ugly

Im not saying that you cant. It is just that alot of people either dont want to take the time to make one or dont have the tools to do so. For a box and 2 10s that pounds decent for $100 its not a bad deal. Granted it is not JL 10w6 setup but it sure beats the crap out of the pyramid bandpass boxes...

i used to have a bandpass box with 2 12 kenwood subs and kenwood amp like 150watts to each sub. sure it pounded my car but it ate my subs up in a few months. it pounded with the gain at less than half.

my friend told me to turn it. i was no way it'll blow them up. he was like the subs can handle more i was like they can but not in this kinda box. so he was trying to tell me bandpass were the best boxs to run cause there sealed and ported. and then was like if they blow i'll buy you new subs. so i was like i'll do it. told him the subs were 200 a piece and if they blew he could give me 250. so i blow them got the money bot a ground zero sub. had it for years till i bot my new L7'z.

anyways bandpass do pound but never put nice subs in them unless you build you own bandpass and know what your doing.

ROFLOL. I like that.

I had a kenwood 10 in a cookiecutter bandpass. It was interesting, and hit ok. However, I didn't like the fact that distortion was much harder to hear.

actually there was talk on one of my other caraudio forums of a competiong where you buy two pyramid hyper pro 15s and see how loud you could make them with unlimited wattage and box space.

im still thinking about experimenting with it

the point being made over on the other sites (mainly TermPro) is that 90% of the system is in the install, not the equipment. this is especially true for subs. you could have a $1000 sub, but if the box is crap, its gonna sound like crap. for the majority of people, just stick with something of decent quality and a decent box for it.

as for bandpasses, they suck if you buy a pre-built one. plain and simple. an enclosure must be built specifically for the sub. seeing as a bandpass is technically a sealed and a ported box, it is extremely important to get the specifications right for the sub to sound right. and seeing as our cars are complex enough to make a proper sealed enclosure, i would encourage the average listener to stay away from trying to build a bp box for the 3rd gens

Timz2882, I have a jensen box I picked up just like that, except it needed alot more work to make sound really good, with 150 watts a sub, I popped the 40 oz. 10's out of there holes in the box, so I ran 16 gauge wire to each sub, turned the woofer about 30* in the box, and used 8 screws for each one instead of four, and used 50% of poly fill in the box in each enclosure, and ran a bead of silicone in the back vented portion of the box, I also turned the woofers around so the front of the woofers fire into the vented portion, this gives them a much punchier and stronger low end, while losing no mid or high end bass. There in my room right now for my home theater setup, but I'm going to put them in my 87 iroc when I start driving it after the winter, I'll attach a picture as soon as I can.
