6x9's and 4x6's
Could a good set of 6x9's and 4x6's still give good bass? I listen to Rock so I don't need the pounding that I currently have with the subs, but would I still have pretty good bass with a good set of speakers. They would be run off of my JVC head unit, 50w x 4? Can anybody reccomend a good set?
Sorry I found the answer to my question....this can be deleted

It all depends what you consider "bass".
I listen to rock most of the time. In my old thirdgen, I had 75x4 going to 2 pioneer 4x6's and 2 6x9's. The sound quality was AWESOME. I had TONS of bass.....er....but don't get me wrong, it's nothing like a dedicated sub. The only time it fell short was when I would crank it WAY up, and the 6x9's could no longer reproduce the bass. I ended up getting a sub because I just wanted that ridiculous thump of a good ole sub, but I don't think it was necessary.
....again, it's going to be up to you, what's "good enough".

I've pretty much decided that I'm going to just get a tube sub so I still have bass, but it will save a BIT more space than my 2 12" subs in the well

6x9's and 4x6's
To All,
This may be a dumb question, but I've only started working on the interior of my car. Am I to understand then that the basic speakers inside are 4x6's and 6x9's (fwd and aft)? Just looking for some basic speakers to put in mine, nice but not overly expensive. Any recommendations?
On a near subject, I have a cd player fm a '01 S-10, thought it would fit in the stereo bay of my car, but found out it's a different style. I would prefer to stay close to a stock design, but get a dual tape/cd deck, does anyone have a suggestion of what to look for there?
Appreciate any response.. Thanks!

If you want stock, sometimes you can find people selling factory Delco radios on ebay. Or look here, www.mnrelectronics.com. They sell factory radios. They're pretty pricey, as you can imagine being a factory Delco product.
But for speakers, if you want bass without subs, Pioneer coaxial and triaxial speakers seem to deliver more bass than most other brands. Just go for higher-end Pioneers. And if you don't like your 4"x6"s, like many others(although I do), but you don't wanna try to make another size fit, then go with a 4"x6" plate speaker. It's like components and should make more bass.
With good quality speakers, you'll get plenty of good sound, no matter what the sizes are. So get what makes YOU happy. Loud and heavy sounds like crap if the car is vibrating and rattling, lol. What's impressive about that?

Hey, here's another idea, Jim. Are there any custom car stereo shops in your area? Not like Circuit City, but a "Gary's Auto Stereo," someone custom. Gary(and probably all custom shops) always has Delcos around from people who have custom installations done and don't want their Delcos back. I'd imagine they'd go for a reasonable price, too--probably even negotiable. And if it needs any repairs, it can be done right there, too, lol. It's just a thought.

Honestly, you won't get a lot of bass outta 6x9s - none outta the 4x6's. If you're looking to some some mid-bass though, I'd check out a 2-way/3-way speaker set up. I have some Kenwood eXcelon 6x9's - 80w RMS/300w MAX. I have them running of my amp. They had a decent amt of mid-bass. But if you're just running them off of a head unit, you're never really gonna get much out of them, because the speakers can only run at what the hu puts out.
As for the 4x6's, I'd suggest putting some bass blockers on those. The $10 ones. They don't block out all the bass, but the speakers are just TOO small to handle any/much mid-bass, and you'll just end up blowing them out, and when you have the volume turned up, you will hear the distortion out of them before you hear it in the 6x9's.
Check out my setup here.
Hope this helps.

I have a pair of 13 year old Alpine 4X6's in the front of my car. I have the bass bypassed at the amp. I haven't really tried the rear speakers for bass as I have them limited to 50hz since I have a 10" subwoofer.
I just pulled the sub since I am getting ready to install a speaker box with dual 10's. I think I will adjust the amp and see what they do for bass. They are suppossed to go down to 35hz... BTW, they are Boston Accoustic RM9's..... Got them for $200 at a closeout sale.
The Alpines are good upper mid and high reinforcement up front, but absolutely no bass reproduction. That's why I'm installing kick panels and Boston Accoustic RM6's up front.

Actually, I have a set of 6.5" Boston Accoustic RM6's waiting for the second half of my speaker box order...... The kick panels!!!!! I've already told a friend that I would give him the 4" X 6" Alpines for the dash of his Chevy pickup. He just has a stock radio and speakers so they will help a lot!!! (snicker, laugh)

Where can I get these bass blockers, how do I hook them up?
How much room do those kick panels eat up?
How much improvement will I see with middle quality 6 x 9's and 4 x 6's over the stock speakers?

To install them, just pull out your speaker. Cut the positive wire in half insert it there.
I got the RF ones for my winter car, and they had detailed instructions in the pack - including writen instructions and a picture.
