Like Dutch-Bird said, it’s probably a broken or slipping belt. Take a look, if its not post back, there is a couple of other things to look for to. But the broken/slipping belt would be the most common.

Keep the old belt; bring it to the store to use as a guide for the replacement belt. Try not to let them sell you on one that's shorter or thicker than your old snapped one. They'll say "oh it's shorter because the old belt stretched"- uh-uh.
If you get a shorter or thicker belt, you'll actually slow down the cassette motor, and your tapes will play in slow-motion! (Been there; done that...) A thicker belt will have less stretch to it then a thinner belt- and a thicker one might not fit the pullies.

It’s not at all uncommon for a belt that length to stretch 5-10% or more. Especially one this old. I would call the place first and see if they use a PRB (Projector Recorder Belt Co.) cross-reference book. It should have the belt for your stock HU in it. It will show one of there part # for a belt that is the same length and width as original.

I certainly won't be spending any money on it, if I can't fix it myself I'll just take out this player and install my mp3 player there instead.
