Where is the best place for speakers?
Third gens aren't the most friendly things when it comes to mounting speakers in the prime sound quality position.
Well I bought some 6x9 Xplod speakers for the rear and 6 1/2 Xplods for the front.
Right now I have the 6x9s in boxes and laying facing upward in the rear hatch area above the trunk so that it rolls off the rear windshield. If someone has a better idea I don;t mind spending a little money.
In the front..I have yet to figure what to do. I have manual windows and the place i want to mount the speakers is in the way of the window crank.
ANY IDEAS?? Please help me out. I'm available on AIM and e-mail...and of course thise board.
thanks all. later

Well if you want sound quality, I've got the perfect solution: ditch the Sonys.
But in case that's not an option, the best sounding setups I have come across in a thirdgen are pretty simple. Find a set of kickpanels with which you can mount a 5" or 6" driver and a 1" tweeter, preferrably with a seperate crossover that you can mount out of the way. After that, all you need is a good sub in the hatch, and make sure everything is being run off of nice amps.
A lot of people want to run 2 or 3 subs and get as many speakers in the car as possible, but if you're going for SQ, the above setup is really the best option; you will be surprised at how well it sounds.

YUP. Dont mount them in the doors. Make a set of kicks out of fiberglass and mount them like Cayse said. They will sound 100xs better.

I'd definately suggest to ditch the Sony speakers and get some decent components for the kick panels. I know there was a guy on here that made them, decent price too.
And by experience I have found that 6x9 boxes suck with ANY speaker in them!

Well, my setup uses the stock speaker locations for 6x9's and 4x6's and a single solobaric L5 10" sub in the back well. My system sounds very awesome. It is definately the quality of the components that you use that determines what it will sound like.
Interfire 3 way 6x9's and Memphis 4x6's with rotatible tweeter and a Memphis Baby Bell 5 ch amp.
Beware of things that go BUMP in the Night.

The best place for the sonys is right back in the box they came out of. But since others have already said that, I won't go into any more detail, except that you can buy a nice pair of coaxes for what your 2 pair of sonys cost.
Anyway, I also agree that kick panels are the way to go. There aren't a lot of other options. I've put 6.5s in the doors, and they don't image well... although it seems to be better than keeping them in the dash.

not everyone is gunna agree with oyur brand of preference.... i know im an audiobahn dude which if ind is hard in these forums.... although i must say @ pepboiz the xplod speakers aound alright but i cant really tell becuz idiots like to push in all the speakers with no grills..... leaving maybe a few.... go on ebay and sell ur sonys an get a set of drop in audiobahn replacments. i dont like the idea of kick panels cuz im afraid one of my genious friends will accidentilly stomp one( my car gets very dark at night w/o the dome light working and worse than limo tint, you really cant see in at any time of the day and seeing out at night takes getting used to). i think that the fornt 4x6 and rear 6x9s are worht leaving in the same spots and sizes if you get worthwhile speakers. also get the sub/s in the rear hatch and a flush mount box for it/them

I LOVE Audiobahn. Well, at least their subs. I've never tried their other stuff. Heard their amps are good, but by the eBay prices, I'd say stay away from the interior speakers. $55 for 6x9? $35 for 4x6? Can't be any good.
I like Polk 4x6's and 6x9's. Sound amazing, last forever, no need to amplify (besides aftermarket head unit), and don't cost some crazy amound.

If you seriously want to know the best place to mount the 6x9"s in a thirdgen....
undo your trunk cover (don't hack it up like I did with mine)
make a 'new' one out of similar material or some kind of tight wood or fiber material.
mount the speakers in that cover, be sure the privacy shade is open to hear the highs. Seriously, that is the best possible location for the rear speakers. Imaging sucks, but the acoustic properties of the hatch glass and cavity underneath are great!
definitly kick panels for the front.
One think not mentioned: 4 channel amp! you don't have to blow your speakers up, just adjust the gain and cross over to get the best sound. How are you going to get sound quality without power?

Uhm, a fiberglass kick panel made correctly can be stood on without braking so friends kicking them isnt an issue.
Autoblahs amps are SERIOUSLY over rated and as much as i hate to say it, i think id take a sony 6x9 over theirs. Ever see an autobahn 6x9? eww!
The best place for a set of 6x9's is back on best buys shelf. Get a good set of components and mount them in the 6x9 area and make a set of kicks also, that and a 10 or 12 inch sub,and a decent amp and you should have a ok system.
BTW autoblah should be making rims not speakers and amps.

I looked once at premade fiberglass kicks but the price of them was SO high. Its really not that hard to make your own, i have a site with some pics and instructions on how to do it if you like. Material is pretty cheap too. It just stinks real bad while your working with it.

Well this may be a far ways into the thread.. but here is what I did where my manual window crank was.. Ya I know mounting a tweeter down there is some what silly.. but it works fine for me.. and it fit the hole perfect.. though the flange you see around it I had to make.. Then mounted the tweeter onto it.. it's held in with three small flush mount allen screws..
