That type of sub is designed to run without an enclosure. But they will sound better if you can seal off the area as good as you can, to make it like an enclosure.

Its worth a try. I once had free air subs in my car. ONCE! for a VERY short time! they sucked! If i had the subs id make the biggest box i could for them and see how they sounded in that. I dont have alot of exp with them though as i threw mine away.

A free air sub is generally a sub that's got a high qts and a stiff suspension. Since the system "q" consists of the mechanical qts of the woofer and the box q, eliminating the box requires a higher qts to result in a full sound. The stiff suspension is due to not having the "air spring" from the pressurized enclosure. The cone excursion needs to be controlled with a stiffer suspension.
Anyway... if you model a free air sub (or any high q sub), you'll find that to get a flat response generally requires an enormous sealed box. This is perfect in a situation like a trunk. Unfortunately, the area under a "plate" isn't nearly big enough, plus all of the usual issues with air leaks certainly don't disappear when you use a free air sub.

Those were 12" Pioneer free air subs. Sounds great in that box, but that was about 4 years ago... long before I got my new system
