My friend with an 88 GTA is putting in a carputer, and was thinking of ways of putting an LCD in. He was thinking about putting the LCD where the stereo controls are on his GTA steering wheel. Could this possibly work? Any other ideas on a good location? He was also thinking about slicing the dash so it would hideaway, then slide it out when needed.

its a cool idea, and ive seen it done, but i think it would be way to annoying having it up there moving all the time, and it would be fun to wire it so you dont see all the wires....

shouldnt be an issue about the wiring, just run it through the column and leave a little extra.

i will most likely do this in the steering wheel of my 240sx, just for ****s and grins.

wow, s swaps sure have gotten popular. i remember back when me and my brother did his he was like... the first person in the portland metro area... it was cool. now they are as popular as civics

Murt TTA, it would be extremely difficult to wire and RF with a single hot source may be the only way to do it. Although there are those 'birds with all those switches in the steering wheel - not sure how that works. Aside from complexity and safety, it seems like it might be a crappy angle to view anyway. I'm down with screens in the car but the steering wheel just seems dumb

who wants the truck motor KA40 or what ever it is.... the SR20DET is just plain better.. and its turboed besides the swap is popular to ppl with the cashish to buy the j-spec motor.. remeber we were never enlightent with tha greatness of the S-bomb...

the ka24de is a good motor, torquey and strong. i will keep it because i cant afford the money or time to switch it over to an sr20det.

if i did, i would still want the later s14 hood/lights too.

Back to the lcd thing. Instead of putting the screen in the stereo wheel, think of putting one where the stereo is at. I had the idea of putting a 17 inch lcd touch panel screen there that would control the stereo and display all the gauges excpet speed and rpms. You can look more into it at the electronics thread and find new console idea.

So is the Ls1 a bad motor just cause it was designed originally as a "truck" motor? Isn't that the same way with the viper v10? I've heard it was originally a "truck" engine too, diff heads/intake though.

SR swaps are the new civic with an aluminum wing. Everyone with a 240 wants one. I'd say be different. Blacktop or redtop I'd say pass and just turbo the 2.4 (Wow, more toque than a 2 litre because it has almost half an extra litre). A little head work and you'll be making much more power than a stock sr20 with the same amount of money. But the again you couldn't be "cool" and say you had a jdm engine.

Back on topic... I'm thinking a 7" LCD or something where the HVAC/radio is and just make a custom plate for the upper center console piece. Would look nice tucked smoothly into the dash. Almost like all the new cars with GPS navi.

The LCD in the wheel is not new and vary doable. Getting the wire through the column is going to be the hard part. Watch your work, leave some slack, watch anything that’s going to move (I know, there’s a lot moving in there). I would re-think this one though. I’ve sat in a car with an LCD in the wheel, it’s not a good place for it. It would just more comfortable to watch if it was above the HVAC controls.
