my bass died..kinda

So today I turned on my car, put the faceplate on the radio as usual and I noticed the bass was hitting really weak. I have two 10's in the back that are fairly decent, I checked all the wiring in the trunk and everything seemed in place, made sure all the settings on the radio were correct and everything, but they are still hitting very weak, like 1/4 potential.. I also tried turning it up on the amp but it only helped a tiny bit. (still sucks!)

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to car audio help me out here please

just hope you didnt punch the subs...

you are supposed to let your subs and speakers warm up when you fist listen to the radio..

its like letting your car warm up... you wouldnt just start the car and take it down the 1/4 mile right..

see if the subs are still moving..that will be a good indication of whats up..

if not...reinstall the head unit (piece that comes off) maybe it wasnt in all the way

electrical components work more effeciently when they're cold. this is why before any competition you dont play your subs for the whole day so they're fresh (also so your batteries are fully charged).

it sounds like your subs are somehow out of phase....it could be a phase adjustment on your deck or on the amp

i think you are mistaken a little.. ive heard, not sure on this tho, that you should let your subs break in b4 you start to crank it...

chiming in!

ok pretty much ...heres what could be wrong with your subs

a terminal could be off in the box ...doubt it because then it wouldnt even attempt to play , if they dont hit as hard as they did before ...they could be blown and you might not notice it ...you need to hold the cone down and turn it up a little bit and see if they rattle if they do....BLOWN! ...and if they do hit and they arent as good as before ...did you forget the "gaskets" ill call them that since thats what they look like ...my subs were good but i didnt put the gaskets on and so i did and rescrewed them into the box with all 8 screws instead of like 3 like a friend did for me ...and boy did they hit like 30000 times harder ...my setup was 2 rockford 12s and a power acustic amp ....the end ....not to bad best 2 12 setup i think ive seen ....im packing more juice into my camaro over the summer since i have a friend that wants to build me a box and such

oh and if they arent blown and you did put the gaskets on ...thennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn you have a bad wiring connection somewhere ...are your RCA cables running to the trunk with your power? ...bad idea you get noise and they do effect performance ...dramatically ..., and if you dont have that then the problem lies somewhere between your head unit and the subs ...swap units if you have another one ...and see if it changes the difference of the subs, if not ...then start checking cables, if you live in the south jersey area ...im free tomorrow and tonight i could take a look!

some companies say their subs require break in....but when you see people with large multisub setups at competitions blow 2-3 subs every run then replace then with out of the box subs and play them again right away im a bit sceptical towards break in time.

it is a smart thing for manufacturers to say though, just so that you dont crank your subs up right away and blow them. If you let them "break in" at lower volumes you'll have a better idea of regular bass as opposed to distorted bass when you jack up the volume...thats my theory atleast

Maybe your deck has reset the equalizer function controlling the subs? On my interim unit, it has a "loud" function that will randomly turn itself off, and hence the subs won't be very loud

you always want to keep the "loud" function off as all it does is disort all the signals. thats how you blow subs.

HA, I could care less at this point, I'll be tossing it into my basement in a couple weeks anyway, besides, it was a $40 sub that I bought like 3 years ago when I didn't know better
