Amped 6x9's now "pop"
Amped 6x9's now "pop"
I am running the Vega SS 6x9's which are rated at 60Wrms. I recently started pushing them with a Rockford Fosgate 250a2 (62.5Wrms x2)There is an incredible increase in sound quality and clarity. They now really pound. The problem is that it seems I am getting less bass. With the headunit running them (22Wrms) they put out more bass but distorted( a kinda sloppy raspy sound) this is due I imagine to underpowering/over bassing? With the Amp they play louder, but when they hit thier distortion point, they now pop loud and contenur playing. This comes with increased bass levels. I was wondering if this is what amps do, or if the speakers are at fault. To test, I took them back off the amp and they get more bass, but it is poor quality...n e one else have an idea? Is this normal? Thanx

Maybe you've got them wired out of phase when hooked to the amp? Maybe the amp has it's internal crossover set?

It sounds like you need to adjust the crossover , and turn down your gain on the amp. You cannt have everthing from one speaker. You can have incredible highs or deep bass not both from the same speaker....why do you think they make componet speakers. The whole idea to the game is to get somewhere in the middle....I would set the crossover at about 100hz to start and go from there , then adjust the gain. any questions email me

Yes Jim I have seen an 6x9 in the last 15 years , and i know that they have "seperate drivers , but do they have real crossovers? no they rely on the audio source. The ampilfied sound is now at the breaking point for the speakers , and they reproduce midbass not low bass like 50hz. The poping is usualy from the gain being too high. also trying to put too much low bass through them is going to also make them sound like ****. Subs are not to make your ***** vibrate either, they are to fill the sound and reproduce low frequency....

if the speakers are out of phase , the bass will be almost none, the driver will also be moving inward and not outward. If you pop the speaker with a battery you can see if it is correct or not. The poping is what i was commenting on not the lack of bass , but thanks Jim

But for the popping to be a result of over-extention, he would have had more bass (or at least as much) as without the amp before he approached the point of maximum excursion. Because he has LESS bass and just not more, it is a sign of a different problem. The popping is still probably a result of the speaker bottoming out, but to do that without having as much bass as before points to another problem. He's either got phasing issues, crossover issues, or subsonic issues. Phasing or crossover is my guess.
2 way 6x9s still have a simple 6dB/octave high-pass filter on the tweeter, which is as much of a crossover as some separates, specifically MB Quart for example.

Thanx for all the posts...albiet the little fight. I checked the crossovers and the gain. I have decided it is too much gain that made them pop. I switched back and forth between the Amp and the headunit a few times and have decided that it only sounded as if there was more bass. The bass I think is the about the same, but the difference is that the mid and lower range is just a lot lot louder. When I set the 6x9's with a HPF to under 50hz, the equality of bass became more prevelant. I think it just sounded a lot less since I nornally use a LPF allowing only above 50hz and they play a lot louder. With the amp u can hear them with the windows up and doors closed over 70ft away. I guess it just drown out the bass..... now I just need to finish with that dam box.... by the way, thanx guys....I guess the popping is from the speakers not being able to play any louder
your welcomr for all the imput , I used to install professionaly and you just need to remember one simple thing about car audio , louder is not always better. In my opion , with the spreakers you have chosen and the amp you are on the way to have good sound quality . Db's are a biproduct of clarity or at least should be. Now just add subs to complete the sound. I used a bass tube initialy in my system and people were amazed by the results. You dont need to make yourself deaf or to rattle your car apart to have a great system. Enjoy your new sound.....
Jim didnt mean to get nasty with you , but I am just offering my opion to others and you seemed to **** on me for no reason. I always like a second opion and to me it sounded that his gain and crossover need to be adjusted. I just wanted to help him , and I think with both of us we have.

I'm not ****ting on anybody dude. I'm just disagreeing. I will always speak my opinion if I disagree with somebody. It doesn't mean I value anybody elses ideas any less. My outspoken disagreement forces others to substantiate their claims/opinions, which is better for the board.
