I think all of the Camaros had 6X9 Speakers in the Sail Panels (on the sides by the rear seats) and 4X6 speakers in the dash. And the Camaros with the Bose System had them in the Dash, Sail panels, kick panels, and rear.

They are definitely not 4"x2". When getting 4"x6"s be careful since sometimes they are too tall and won't fit. I have JBLs up front and love them. I have those exact Pioneer 6x9"s and love them as well. They sound huge. I recently put 6.5"s in the kick panels and that just makes it even better.

for what, the kappa plates?

on my firebird, I did the following:
1) Pull dash off ~ 10 minutes maximum
2) Unbolt and remove old speakers ~ 5 minutes max
3) regarding the driver's side...using an exact-o/utility knife, I cut the crap out of the A/C ducting... until the new kappa plates fit. Then I simply put duct tape on the parts I had to cut.
4) Cut off old connectors for speakers, and wirenut in your new kappa plates.(the passenger side requires no modification)

I never had any problems with them, when I used em... most of my connections are crimped now... but on a speaker, it's not such a big deal...

I used to wirenut my entire stereo harness! that was fun...

Come on scrappy, wire nuts are just bad. They're intended for a house, not a car going down the road hitting pot holes. You really what to kill the amp IC in that DEH-P8600. Pioneer amp ICs don't deal well with intermittent connection. A bad connection can and will take out a Pioneer amp IC. Vary common failure. On the radios that get sent in with harness in and it's got wire nuts, you can bet the amp IC is toast.
Just trying to save you from a dead 8600.

heh, I don't use wirenuts on the harness... only on the speakers! I have had to remove them too many times to actually crimp the connections...

I think I'll buy some quick disconnects or something... to make it easier.

I have to pull my 6x9's every couple of months to change something or another... like when my amp got stolen, I had to switch back to my headunit wiring... stuff like that, but you're right, wirenuts are bad...

are you saying that an intermittent connection to a speaker is what can cause bad ICs?

Has anybody actually noticed that virtually all speakers under the sun come with the blade-style quick disconnect terminals already? Just use those!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.205" for the positive terminal (both terminals on some speakers) and .110" for the negative.

One of the thing that can damage an amp IC. This is a common problem for Pioneers.
From one of their engineers "If we would use amps that could take an intermittent load we'd be bullet proof". Me "Not quite bullet proof but 'darn' close."
It's not as common with other manufactures, but they have other problems.

This is what I was thinking!!!

To get around the factory clip (if it's still there...) use t-taps and tap into the wire. That way, you don't have to deal with stripping the wire, and crimping it... 100x easlier imo.

the sail panel speakers make sense... that was the 'subwoofer' setup...

I don't think those 4" dash speakers are stock, but I could be wrong...

4x6 Speakers

this is a little late, but instead of butchering the dash all to hell to fit crappy oval 4x6s, you could buy Boston 746s for the dash- its a plate speaker with a 4 inch woofer and 3/4 inch tweeter that... wait for it... drops rite in without any modification and will sound better than any oval 4x6 out there

The 746s drop into a camaro dash, but require significant work to fit into a firebird dash. Fortunately, there's a step-by-step "how to" in the thirdgen.org tech section that covers this exact installation.

i certainly do, they are a little pricy, but you will be sold on the sound. In my opinion, they are the best 4x6 replacement thus far. The bostons produce super clear highs and awsome midrange, no other 4x6 can touch them. I put them in my 'D Am (grand am) and i could not b happier, n in a few weeks when i pull the F bomb out im puttin a pair of thos in it as well.

have you personally compared the Infinity Kappa plates with those Boston 746 plates?

or did you just buy the Boston's and you really like them?

I compared them back in 2001. I believe the Bostons are still the same. Whether or not the Kappas changed, I have no idea.

Keep in mind this was 4 years ago, so my recollection may not be 100% accurate, but I think I remember finding both to be pretty pleasing. I recall liking the highs a bit more with the Kappas, which isn't surprising considering the cheap mylar tweeter that the bostons have, but if I recall, I think I preferred the sound of the bostons overall. The midrange was cleaner.

Hey, if I get kickpanels, would anyone recommend leaving the plates hooked up at all? I wonder if there is some 'blend' of sound I can make with the gains that would sound pleasing.

I definitely like the way the speakers reflect off the glass for tailgate parties and such.

why not, to me it could only enhance the sound if used the dash speakers for mid-high range. 4 years is a long time jim, i believe they changed the tweeter in the 746, that or my ears are shot because i wouldnt put nothing else in place of stock 4x6s.

for info on the boston 746s go here

Same tweeter.

Scrap,

Keeping your dash speakers hooked up will completely eliminate all benefits gained from having kicks. The whole point to using kicks is to get them the hell away from the dash. You'll still get plenty of sound to impress your friends and **** off your neighborhood... in fact, since the larger speakers in the kicks can handle substantially more power, you'll get a lot more output from the kicks.

yeah I love when a speaker is further from me, and louder to compensate for the distance... the sound is fuller to me...

there is nothing like being at a concert if you ask me...
