Well I finally bit the bullet after much nagging from the better(looking) half, and installed some sounds into the IROC.
Ordered a JVC KD-AVX1, and am EXTREMLY HAPPY with it. Never been a real big fan of DVD players in cars but always liked the idea of a decent sized navigation screen for moving through folders of MP3s etc...

Best part so far is its DVD-Mp3/WMA support. So I can have 4.7gig of music per disc. Much cheaper alternative to HDD headunits etc. Actual DVD playback on the 3" screen is extremly clear and definatly adds to the value of the unit. Ive been requested however to install a full sized screen (7") over the week that will sit directly infront of teh passenger and will fold neatly into the dash. Good for the trips to Darwin I guess. And somethnig to watch at teh finish line while im waiting for some ****box ***** to catch up. :P

I deleted the AC/Heater controls since all of that was removed some time ago and just made up a new face for teh whole area out of steel. At teh moment the area where the controls were is just blank but this week ill mount some gauges i have in it that are currently n pods on teh dash.
Now i have to start replacing the rest of teh dash so its doesnt look so old and cruddy.

Will it read dual layer DVD-/+Rs? Then you could get 8+ gigs.

is this regular din???? or some weird size, the mounting bracket looked custom...
this would be my dream-come-true... if I could get DL DVD discs full of mp3s... I'd scrap my whole carputer...
plus did you say it does navigation?

I was refering to its ability to navigate through the folders and mp3s, not as an actually navigation system. Alothough there are Aux video inputs that could be used for a seperate system I guess.
THE headunit itself is single din, but THE face is about 5mm larger at THE top and bottom. I've have now installed a 7" indash screen in front of the passenger seat and am really impressed with the listing of MP3, Folders and Jpegs.
THE 'mount' is simply a piece of galvanized (sp?) steal cut out using the old plastic piece as the template. Then covered in black vinyl. Im just about to install a piece to replace THE shifter section as well.

Gipp'ed? I guess I've never seen that word in writing...
isn't it more like gypped?
in fact, I'm pretty sure it is...
I thought you were making up a new word at first... sorta like... "Man you got gimped bro... big time!"
comes from the word Gypsy... cuz they're low-life, no-good cheats!

because you already won the thread, by posting the coolest damn headunit I've ever seen....
I'm pretty sure that's the ONLY dvd player headunit (single din, no less,) that plays DVD-MP3 discs.
can you verify if it will play double-layer dvd disc full of mp3s? that would rock my world.

doing some research on my own... I've come to find that, YES it supports dual layer dvd's full of mp3s...
but there is a HUUUGGEEE drawback... it doesn't remember where you are in the song when you turn your car off!!! what the hell is that? plus reviewers are up in arms over the slow track-to-track speed, and long song information display delay...
it was a nice idea though...

Yeah you have no idea how hard its been for me to find a dual layer disc in this town.
ANyway, good to hear it supports it. Yeah the lack of IN-SONG resume is kinda annoying, but the track to track seems fine to me. I have a 7" screen attached to it and the display for the next song comes up in less than a second on it, with it taking about a second on the 3" one. It does depend on how much cr@p is in the ID3 tag. Some come up instantly.
Still gets a 9.5/10 from this happy camper. -0.5 for the resume but with all the other features I can let that go...

i have one of the early mp3 decks that was out a few years ago and it sucks that it doesnt remember where in the track I was at when i shut the car off.
Upside to it, is it has a aux mini jack on the front so i just plug in my Creative Zen Xtra that I scored on a pricing glitch at bestbuy for 20 bucks. 30gb mp3 player, but as soon as i got home I "Tim the tool man taylored" it by shoving a 60gb harddrive in it so now i got music for like 2 weeks if needed.

yep old school Aiwa...i was like one of the first mp3 decks out, I think it may have even been Aiwa's first mp3 deck. Cost like 400 bucks back in the day. I have a 8500mp in my othercar and was thinking about upgrading this one but now since i just use the nomad i dont really need to.

I believe there were 3 AIWA mp3 headunits.... the first one was buggy as hell, and skipped like crazy..
the second one worked fine, but it was still a single-line display.
by the time the second one came out, they already had the jensen mp3510... then next they had some cheap sony version
third one was basically the same, if I recall correctly.
I've never had the AIWA, but I've tried to have the best mp3 deck at all times...
