bastards messed up my dash lights
i pick my car up from the shop that put my alarm in today, and the alarm works great, but the dude said he moved a couple of grounds under the steering column. now my dash lights aren't always on, more off than on, and my deck's lights flash bright to dull if my stereo is up. did he maybe ground the wrong things together, and are they obligated to fix it?
its a compustar 2w900fm btw

take it back to him and explain to him the problems you're having with it, he is obligated to fix it IMO but he might see it otherwise, but then again it would be a good way to keep a customer (by apologizing and fixing it)

well i called earlier and the sob tells me "well your car is old, a lot of things are bound to go wrong with it" and "it must just be a coincidence that your dash lights are off most of the time and your deck flickers but only after we touched it"
he told me that the only wire that had anything to do with the dash was the illumination wire, and how that could not have anything to do with it because its just one connection. if its a loose wire or something i'll just fix it, but say he pulled on something he shouldnt have, and the loose connection is way up inside my dash, where do i (or him) start to look, i've never been way up in the dash, behind the gauges.

the illumination wire does not CONTROL the dash lights... it's what tells your stereo how bright the dash lights are...
Go there tomorrow, drop off the car and tell them to fix it...
if they won't do anything, contact your credit card and stop payment and tell them what happened...
once the credit card/bank gets involved... lemmetellya.. your car will be fixed faster than you can sue someone... (actually... it will be fixed only SLIGHTLY faster than you can sue them...)
do your headlights/parking lights dim at all with the dash lights? plus does this happen when you are stopped, or only when driving? can you hit your dashboard with your fist and make them flicker?
if they won't fix it, tell them you want them to remove the alarm and get your money back... I knew you shoulda gone with viper for cheaper! -- it could be a faulty alarm.

Riiiiight...aside from just being wrong on the "only wire" part, all electrical circuits require a supply & return path. There's more than one wire that could be at fault here. By the way...are the instrument cluster lights dimmed in the middle? I've seen several 3rg gens do this and I think I've tracked it down to a faulty connection where the cluster mounts into the dash.

what do you mean, are the middle ones dimmed more than the rest? the gauge lights dont dim, they're either on or off. i havent been having much trouble with it lately though, havent noticed it for a couple of days

I have a 91 Camaro; which should have a somewhat different cluster, but one of my friends has the same car as I do (except in a V6 version) and we get the same car problems at about the same time. Anyway, this could be related to your problem.
One night, I was driving and out of nowhere, the middle two or so bulbs in the cluster died. All of the outside bulbs work. This means at night I really can't see the temp gauge or the first few 1000-2000 RPM tick marks. I thought the bulbs had burnt, but upon pulling the cluster, they were fine. I replaced the cluster and they worked again. I went through this about two more times before noticing that if I press up on the cluster -- the problem goes away. I think it's merely a sucky connection on my car. Could be the same issue if yours has a similar interconnect.

lesson : do not allow IDIOTS to install stuff. save the money and install it yourself. those little bookletts they give with it (installation manual) have always been enough for me.
anything you get confused on, we the thirdgen resource can help you figure out.

I don't know... Circuit City did a flawless job of installing my 790XV... they had to pull all my plastic panels, and I didn't see one broken tab or screwdriver prymark on any of the panels... their installation manual must have been very thorough, because I doubt they do too many of our cars.
Everything was neatly zip-tied and wire-loomed together... it's almost impossible to tell the difference between the car's stock wiring, and the alarm wiring.

well this guy is the only alarm installer at the biggest car audio shop around here. i spoke with him for an hour or so before hand, and he knows what hes doing, i also saw some other installs of his that were very nice. why he's being a dick to me, i dont know, i have been nothing but polite to him even after he screwed my dimmer all up. still no idea what it is, but it did it again today for the first time in a few days.
