Location and porting in a sense. First, sit in your back seat and be surprised at how much more you hear. Second, pull out the interior trim around the sails. It's hollow all the way to the hatch, where it opens to the rest of the car.

4x6's definately, 6x9's aren't useless... just better options out there. you can't expect the same quality sound out of a 6x9 then say a component, the staging location itself works great. it's all on the product you use. but, like everything it's all personal preference.

I'd say you'd be wasting $500 if you put a good pair of components in the rear...

go 6x9s back there.

one thing I've always wondered, is why does everyone say it's bad to do a 3-way component setup, and have the midbass in the sailpanels? Don't the newer camaros do this? I know for sure they have 4" speakers in the sailpanels, and you can hardly hear any voice from them... you hear voice from the rear 4" and the front 4", not the sail panels though.

Two things. First, as Jim has said a few times off axis sound from virtually any car driver is pretty bad. Having woofers in the sails would give you a nice sound from the passenger’s side but not that great of a sound from the driver’s side if you’re sitting in the driver’s seat.

The idea is to keep all points of a given channel as close as possible for the best image. This doesn't matter as much in terms of lower frequencies (ie subwoofer playback) because those sound waves are longer than the car is.

source
Sound travels at 1130 feet per second. So an 1130Hz tone is 1 foot long (or 12 inches). Therefore a 20Hz wave is 1130/20 or 56.5 feet while a 5000Hz tone is 1130/5000 or 0.226 feet or 2.7 inches.
Some people don't like having two distinct points of sound per channel (ie one in front and one behind), even if the one behind you is playing predominately lower frequencies. Once you have a speaker in the back that you designate as a midbass speaker, odds are that it will get crossed over anywhere between 2,100 Hz and 3,500 Hz (the most common component crossover range) and at that point you can defiantly tell that the sound is coming from behind you. Incidentally, the human voice is within that range.

With that said, I am planning on eventually mounting some 6.5 or 7" drivers in the back of the car (in the hatch area before the well) to add a little oomph to the midrange response that my car kills off when driving around (road noise, relatively mild exhaust). I realize that this will throw the image off some, but I don’t have room in the front of the car for the additional driver.

Oh yes, 2kHz is most definitely a very directional sound. The only way it probably wouldn't sound strange is if you had other speakers to compensate and these were only for fill.

That's the idea. Idealy I will run them at about 1/2 the wattage of the front components. But who knows if I will ever get around to doing it. So many unfinished projects... I should take a survay of all the various parts I have sitting around for mods I never started.

components are here

no digital camera, so i'll wait until my kicks get here and get before and after install pics. then take em somewhere to get developed on a cd

rezn8r says my kicks should be ready to ship today or tomorrow, so ought to have em for my 4 day weekend. wirings all ready to go, im itchin to install some stuff.

hooked one of them up to my orion and it was pretty freakin loud just sitting there on the rear deck, was moving itself around, even sounded pretty decent with no enclosure.

rainbow makes the alc 6.2 sets for alumapro, if any of you are wondering why i went with this stupid sounding set lol. basically like the rainbow germaniums, only you cant get the germaniums as far as i know.

arg... I was literally planning on getting some components and kicks in the next few weeks...

I swear I have the worst luck...

In the same 7-day timeframe...
- My car is totalled
- My back is all messed up
- My child-hood dog passed away
- Only get rental car for 5 days--still haven't seen a dime for my car.

I had seen your change of sig and read through your totaled thread about a week ago. At that point you weren't sure about the back problems and were resisting seeing a doctor. It sucks when stuff like this happens

I'm getting treatment now... it sucks

what really sucks is that the company is only offering me $1300 for my car (including the new tires.)

Doing basic searches on the internet, my car was selling, private party, anywhere from $1800-$2995...

On my car:
- brand new tires
- 2-way alarm/window module
- many many new parts all over, everywhere
- a friggin' rebuilt motor...

I called the Texas Department of Insurance, and she said the same thing as the insurance company... that they were only responsible for paying the "cash value" of the car... and I only have a few options now... almost all of them involve a lawyer.

I'd take $2000, as long as the car was still a $100 buyback... because then MAYBE I could part it out for like $500... max
