replacing factory speakers

sorry if this a repeat. I have a 85' Trans Am. It had a sound performance package of some sort. It has 2 3" or 4 inch speakers in the sill panel instead of a 6x9" speaker. I cut the stock box to fit my 6x9's, but how are they supposed to mount up. I hate the hack job I did to make the speakers work. How do factory 6x9's mount to the car? I'll post pics later this week.

Hmm, I know this is probably not what you want to hear, but the factory speaker locations are terrible. If I were you, I would just give up on trying to make the 6x9 idea work and invest in a set of good kick panels. Far better sound quality will come from that location, and you'll have better speaker selection.

And what quality stuff would you be referring to? 6x9s are one of the worst sounding speaker designs in my opinion. No matter who makes them, they sound muddy and unclear to my ears.

As far as rear fill goes, why do you need it? The sound stage is supposed to be in front of you, not chopped up into sections like the stock speaker locations make it.

There is no good place for rear speakers. No matter what you do with them, all they do is ruin the soundstage and pull the stereo image back off the dash.

I am just curious how stock 6x9 mount in the rear. My car came with 2 4inch speakers instead. It is designed in the shape of a 6x9 so that is what I want. They sound fine, especially when you go past the stock or autozone special 20 dollar deals. They require more power than a stereo can give them as well. Thanks for the help.

ya know... not to bash any body but ill worry about the sound staging and perfect sound system set ups in my house... i mean when im in my car i just gotta hear it, and hear the frequencys clearly, it doesnt have to be perfect and i like my rear speakers, and i dont mind my 4x6 being where they are at... Sure, the speakers do sound better in the door panels or kick panels but im not going to spend 200 bucks on custom kicks for a good soundstage... i like to drive with the windows down and radio up most of the time, so wouldnt the incoming air screw up my sound stage any way? besides, you sit on the left side, and the correct position would be to sit in the middle, so you can hear the differnces between left and right channels.

all i need is a stereo and 4 speakers in my car and im happy...

Not trying to bash you or anything, but usually people who haven't heard a quality sound system are the ones who are quick to disregard the idea of that very system in favor of cheap stuff.

But whatever floats your boat man. Just trying to throw suggestions out there. Have a good day.

There are plenty who have heard a good system, but just aren't into it enough to drop the coin and spend the time necessary to get their own system there.

To be honest, sometimes it's nice to just get into my dad's truck, turn on the stock radio and just listen to the damned music.

One of the hardest things to do when you're as obcessed with audio as I am is to stop listening to your stereo and start listening to the music.

Maybe I'm just obsessive over good sound. I can't stand listening to music that sounds tinny and hollow. I thought my stock sound system was pretty good, until I took a ride in my friends Grand Prix. It has the speakers mounted in the doors, and a tweeter in the A-pillar... two 12" subs in the back. I quickly realized how much of the music I was missing.

Personally, I can't see where $200 would be a huge problem if you drop cash for a $300 deck, or $150 speakers or $400 amp. I could see where it would be reasonable if you could find an amazing pair of speakers for $50 or $75, but at that price you probably won't find any speakers that sound THAT much better over the stock system. However, I am largely biased to that sort of thinking due to the fact that most of the audio stores around my area don't sell anything but Sony, Pioneer and Kenwood.

Just my 2¢.

see this is how i feel, even now, in my 94 grand am with its crappy kenwood rears and decent 746es up front from boston acoustics and an alpine deck i just find myself tinkering with the eq, trying to get just the right amount of treble- too much and my ears will bleed - and bass and mid range. in short, im listing to my radio, not the dam music like i should be, but in my firebird, with its ac crapco tape deck i jam and actually listen to the lyrics and rythem of the guitar, drums, and bass guitar...
i have heard good systems its just i dont have the coin to drop on them and even if i did, i kno i would just drop that coin on performance goodies, like some headers...

On to the topic. Did you cut the factory speakers out of their box? That box should have unbolted/screwed and you can take the complete box out of the car. Then the 6x9s should screw right into the plate. I’m I thing of a different setup? Should be pretty straight forward.

I cut the box my kicker 6x9's, and wouldn't bolt up to the metal mounts. I have heard quality sound systems, helped build a yukon with 4 15 inch ORION H2s with 2500 watts a piece. Eventually next winter I will put 2 10 inch orion h2s, kick pannels, all my stock location, and door pannel speakers. All of my sound speakers will have 300 watts rms to. For now I have what I have and sounds 10 times better than the crap that was in there. I am probably going to make a aluminum plate to mount the speaker and get rid os the ugly sail pannels. Ohh not to say I don't know to much about stereos, but the Yukon Hit a 163 decibals with old orion subs, and all of this the only rattle was from the roof in front of the wall of subs from flexing 6 inches or so. It beat a guy ranked 9 th in the nation.

NEEDAZ you are on the right path and one of the few to actually answer the question. My speaker holes didn't match the box mounting holes, hence I was curious if there is a stock box I can buy. and for the others it sucks sitting in the back without those speakers, and it would just be dumb with nothing behind them. I am repainting, resealing, rebuilding the entire car this winter. Not enough money for everything just yet.
