I know this has probablly already been anwsered more than a few times, but i wanted some info and suggestions on how hard it is and and tips on installing some new 4x6's in my dash.Thinking about maybe some pioneers, b/c ive used a many in the past and they've been relatively affordable and extremely reliable with good sound.

 

All you have to do is unscrew the dash panel and pop it off. If you're buying 4X6's make sure that the top mounting depth is no more than 1 3/4 inches. Plate speakers work well because the mounting depth isn't to deep. Clarion, Infinity, and Polk all make some good plate speakers. I found my Clarion 4X6's on EBay for $30, or check Crutchfield.

 

can you use other than 4x6's?

 

There would be a lot of modifications to the metal under the dash if you were to try and put a bigger size speaker in. If you're looking for the best possible sound for the front of the car look into getting kick panel pods. Q-Logic makes direct replacement kick panel pods for thirdgens that house 5 1/4" component speakers. Or look through some of the posts in here, I think there are a couple people who offer custom pods. The kick panel location gives you much better imaging not to mention the option of using higher end component speakers which sound a lot better than a set of 4X6's in the dash.

 

Whats the maximum attainable depth of the dash speakers on an 89?
is 1 3/4s the deepest we can get with out major mods?

 

I put 5-1/4" or 5-1/2" rounds in the dash. Depth wasn't an issue in the passenger's side, but on the driver's, I had to remove the dash cluster and notch it a bit to make the speakers fit. I forget how deep my speakers were, but they fit just fine and sound great!

 

1 3/4" is the depth for any third gen. You might be able to use spacers to fit deeper speakers in but I've never tried it. My Clarions are 1 3/4" mounting depth and I had a little bit of trouble getting those in so I wouldn't go any deeper. But like I said there are a lot of good 4x6's out there that will fit, though I would give kick panels some serious thought, they sound a lot better.

 

I used the rounds because they became "available" when the car they were in had an engine mishap; hehehe...I would've preferred to get some nice $200 set of 4x6's, but it's still fun when people "in the know" look at the front speakers and seem flustered as to how I got them in.

 

I recently put in a pair of Kicker 4x6 DS46 speakers in the front dash. Very easy to install, but a little tight on the driver side but was able to get them in with no modifications whatsoever. Great sound and not very expensive.

yeo i actually put 6.5 pioneers in thefront and they fit perfect. idk u have to make ur own brsackets but they DO fit, will have pics soon!
