Visable 6x9's
I was wondering if it would be possible to cut the sail panel on the inside and make the speaker visable. If any one has any pics of this could you post em up? thanx

Sure you can make the 6x9's visable! Just remove the interior piece that lays over the speaker!

I thought about that but it wouldnt look right Im talkin about cutting the cloth cover over the speaker to where it still will have the cover and be able to see the speaker.

If you plan on doing that, I'd suggest finding a later model 3rd gen that has the plastic covers. Not sure what year they switched them but most of the cars I have picked up had the card board covers, but the 92 Formula I got had plastic covers. I think the plastic covers would hold up better if you want to cut out the center section.
My 82 Camaro had blank panels, as in no cloth trim, and no rear speakers at all. The sail panel plastic was a solid sheet with no holes or anything lol. Came equipped with the front 4x6's only and an AM/FM only radio, no tape deck
I mounted the speakers right to the sail panel after cutting the holes for them. That was temporary until I picked up a parts car with the "normal" interior in black.. the 82 had blue vinyl with blue plastic

Besides that was more than 10 years ago now when I got rid of that car. Was a 4 cyl 4 speed, picked it up for $200 and drove it about a yearr before it went to the scrap yard. Trending Topics

I have the plastic covers and I was considering cutting them and putting in my grills, but I was woriied about rattles. My 6x9s already rattle that piece.
xgtharo86x: how did you mount those there? seems to me there was a space between the panel and the factory mount. Are those mounted right to the panel?

all I did was cut the panal out then i put the panal back on. Then i layed the speaker in and took a nail and a hammer and tap a lil dot on the metal behind the panal were the screws R goin 2 go. Then drill pre. holes 4 the screws. all u need is longer screws ( come with new set of 6x9s) and your done...

1 more thing u cut the panal so the6x9 doesnt go though the panal just lays on top of the panal and there will b a gap between the panal and the metal plate (it suppost 2 do that) thats wut the longer screws R 4. but dont over tighten the screw u still want the panal 2 fit rite. if u have any Ques. just ask - Mike

Hmm seems to my mine would rattle alot more then. Maybe I can find an extra panel at the JY to experiment on. Maybe filling the space between with expanding foam would work... I could use one of my old blown factory speakers to fill it then take it apart. that might actually fix my current rattle problems. Well I cant do anything now until I get back in the US anyway and have a look.

Re: Visable 6x9's
Sorry for resurrecting a year and a half old thread, but it was the first one I came across that described the situation I have when I did a search.
My 86 has those "blank" plastic panels, no cloth in the sail panel area. When I bought the car in 93, the previous owner simply had rear speakers in a box in the rear cargo area, which I hated because it just meant I dumped them into the backseat whenever I took the t-tops off and stored em in back.
Anyway, I just had a couple questions about this type of setup:
1) I've never taken the panels off. When I replaced my headliner, I just loosened them by removing the coat hook and one other screw holding the top of the panel in. Does the whole panel come out the same way as has been described for other "normal" sail panels with the fabric? Just lift up and out after those 2 top screws are out?
2) If so, are the same mounts located back there for the speakers, or since it didn't come with any installed, are there possibly no speaker mounts? If I recall, I don't think there was any material of any kind between the panel and the body from what I saw when I was putting in the headliner. Not sure if that has any bearing on what I'm asking, but figured I'd throw it in just in case.
I am debating whether I should install them behind there if the mounts exist, and cutting holes in the panels for speaker covers, or if I should simply look for the fabric covered sail panels in a junkyard. (which of course I would have to find in the med dark grey to match, or replace the fabric on).
I'm not sure which would be less of a hassle and/or end up looking and sounding better.
Thanks.
